2007 Schedule Released; All-Star Game in Wareham

Posted by Andrew | Filed Under News |

I woke up this morning and there was an early Christmas present: the 2007 Cape Cod Baseball League Schedule!

Here are some of the key dates:

  • June 15th, opening day with the first pitch at Lowell Park in Cotuit at 5pm. Night games at Falmouth, Harwich, Hyannis, and Orleans.
  • July 11th, the annual game at Sandwich High School with the Bourne Braves hosting the Falmouth Commodores this year.
  • July 13th, the second annual New Bedford game with the Wareham Gatemen hosting the Hyannis Mets.
  • July 28th, the all-star game at Clem Spillane Field in Wareham. In my opinion, this is a great place to host the game with a large capacity crowd and stadium-like atmosphere.
  • August 1st, all-star recognition night at Fenway Park in Boston.
  • August 10th, the beginning of the Cape League playoffs!
  • August 15th, the last possible day for Cape League games and summer league play as mandated by the NCAA.

Things to note:

  • Yet again, there is no Nantucket game. The Touching the Game: A Celebration of the Cape Cod Baseball League DVD praises the game as giving Nantucket a chance to see some of the action and the players a chance to see the island. I don’t think New Bedford is more exciting than Nantucket, but I could be wrong…
  • The league is heavily relying on no rainouts during the playoffs. One missed game will cause a double-header.
  • Hyannis games are now all at 7pm thanks to the new lights!
  • All Sunday games at Bourne are at 2pm. Go after church!
  • On July 4th, games start at 2pm, 4pm, 5pm, 6pm, and 7pm. Theoretically, this gives someone the opportunity of going to 5 Cape League games in one day. Dare to try?

Great post. There is some advantage to having East Coast and West Coast contributors. We can stay on top of developments 24X7!

Several of the Cape league books talk about games being played on Nantuckett. I hope the league continues to think about how baseball can keep the region connected in some way. I think it would be good to have a game on the Vineyard as well.

7 pm games in Wareham are difficult if you have kids. I didn’t look carefully to see if there are many of those. Last year we had to leave the playoff early but listened to the rest on the cell phone through the broadcast network.

Somehow I’ve not missed the All-Star recognition night at Fenway for several years. Hoping to make it again. I’m always sitting in left field at the fence where my son and I meet lots of Cape players who are enjoying the night.

Christmas comes early ! What a nice surprise it always is on the day the CCBL announces its schedule for the next season !
Now, if we could just get some of these teams to post some off-season news on their websites. It would be good to see the early-season rosters. Yarmouth-Dennis has a note on their site that says the 2007 roster will be posted in mid-December. We’re waiting ! So far, Wareham and Cotuit are the only teams who have posted their rosters. You can be sure Chatham and Orleans will be the last to do so. Chatham usually posts their roster in late May and Orleans does not post theirs until early June.

Wareham has several offseason “notes” in their notebook section as well as their 2007 schedule, an announcement about the All-Star game and a piece about their new infield that is being installed….rumor has it that they are also installing an entire new outfield and brand new perimeter fencing around the entire complex. Should be in prime condition for the All-Star game.

About Nantucket… it is a big pain for the teams that have to go over to Nantucket. It is a long ferry ride back and forth…not to mention expensive..and most of these kids have jobs to worry about. Because they play almost every day and practice just as much, this trip becomes difficut. The New Bedford game is not meant to replace the Nantucket game. New Bedford is extremely interested in getting a Cape franchise the city has managed to get at least Wareham and Hyannis to help them with their cause…I believe these same teams played in New Bedford last year.
