Bourne, where are you?

Bournebraves.org apparently is taking the off-season to rest and rebuild. A CodBall reader several weeks ago pointed out that the Braves website had gone down for whatever reason, and thanks to readers we inquired. Word from Braves-land is that they are working on a site re-build. The site is still down. We can’t wait to see the new and improved Braves website, complete with a 2007 roster. C’mon. By the way, is it just me or is the Cotuit website newly designed? Speaking of Cotuit, I am scheduled to interview CCBL MVP Justin Smoak on Friday for a CodBall...

Cape Cod Baseball Felt Nearby in Seattle Today

The Cape Cod Baseball League felt quite near today even though I was in Seattle. First, we watched Tim Lincecum (Harwich Mariners) as he was presented today in Seattle with the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award. The award is given each year to the baseball player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability AND exemplary sportsmanship. Past winners of this prestigious award include current Major League Baseball stars Robin Ventura, Jason Varitek, Mark Kotsay and Phil Nevin, as well as 2001 winner Mark Prior of the Chicago Cubs. Tim spoke during the halftime break of the University of Washington v. Oregon State University basketball game. He thanked coaches and fans, but took a moment to thank his dad, who he said was his inspiration. Second, J.J. Putz (Pictured) of...

Cape Baseball League Snags Top Freshmen Players

UPDATED: Thanks to an anonymous post, I am updating this article to reflect that CodBall’s database is good but not perfect. Due to some spelling conventions I missed 4 players who are in the top 25, and will play on the Cape. So, nearly half of the nation’s top 25 freshmen are now on active CCBL rosters. Baseball America has published its pick of college baseball’s top Freshmen this season, and eight of the top 25 are currently on active CCBL rosters for the 2007 summer season. In other words, one-third of the top players will be on display this summer in the CCBL. As of tonight I only see 6 of 10 rosters posted. CodBall maintains a database (rudimentary) of active CCBL players and has cross-checked the Baseball America list with those rosters...

’07 Schedule on Google Calendar

I’m officially ready for the 2007 season. I have the schedule on my iPod, cellphone, and computer. How? Well, today I created the 2007 schedule on Google Calendar. Then, I entered the iCal address into iCal on my Mac. Finally, I synched my iPod in iTunes and my cellphone in iSync. Click here for instructions on how to synch the calendar with Microsoft Outlook, Apple’s iCal, or Yahoo! Calendar. Here are the addresses for the Google Calendar. I will do my best to keep the calendar updated during the season! ...

Brett Sinkbeil (Commodores) Named Top NL East Prospect

This is the cool thing about the Cape Cod Baseball League. My then 7-year-old son shows up for his first day in the 2005 Falmouth Commodores kids’ clinic. It’s hot, and for kids of all ages it’s also early. Like clockwork, the players show up 5 minutes late with gigantic jugs of liquid from Dunkin’ Donuts. The camp gets crackin’ 10 minutes after the start-time. A lanky 6’ 4” guy gathers his group of 1st graders in right field to practice some grounders. That’s Monday. My 7-year old doesn’t know this guy at all. By Friday a friendship has taken hold — we’re talking with this player about our families and posing for pictures together. Two years later, I see the player’s picture in Baseball America’s preview (1/15-28/07) of the...
