Falmouth Posts ’07 Roster (West Leads 4-1)

Posted by Greg | Filed Under News |

The Western Division of the CCBL currently leads the Eastern Division 4-1 in the preseason race to sign players and post rosters. Well, maybe.

The Falmouth Commodores have just posted their preseason roster, joining Cotuit, Hyannis and Wareham in the West, and Yarmouth-Dennis in the East.

Truth be told, this means very little. In fact one source told CodBall that Chatham A’s manager John Schiffner does not like his team’s roster posted until nearly last, just before June 15th. Seems Schiffner and Tony LaRussa have a few things in common. Orleans is usually the last team to post. Sources say there is some delicate dancing that goes on between summer leagues and the selection of Team USA.

On the Falmouth roster, Dan Dunn replaces Chuck Sturtevant as General Manager. Jeff Trundy returns as field manager with Matt Ranson and Chris Forbes returning as coaches.

Aja Barto, Jeremy Farrell, Shooter Hunt and Brett Wallace are returning players for Falmouth.

A special shout-out goes to Washington State players Jared Prince and Travis Coulter. Go Cougs!

I disagree that there is any delicate dancing between the Cape and TeamUSA. It really comes down to what the player and his college coach believe will be best for his career. For example, David Price (Vanderbilt), Pedro Alvarez (Vanderbilt) and Joe Savery (Rice) were all on CCBL rosters last year before electing to go to TEAM USA. Tim Corbin, Vandy’s coach, was the head coack for TEAM USA. Where do you think they went? Savery was supposedly coming to the CAPE because he played for USA the previous year and wanted to experience both. He got hurt and did neither.

The hard part for the CCBL GM’s and coaches is giving a full-time spot to a kid that has the potential to be invited to TEAM USA. They have to decide whether it is worth the risk.

Brewster has posted their roster…although their website is terrible.

If it is true that Chatham holds off until posting their roster, it makes zero sense. You sign a player…he’s yours so I’m not sure what there is to hide. As far as the rest of them, I think they have a hard time keeping their websites current. Cotuit, Hyannis & Wareham do well keeping their websites current with Wareham probably the best. Bourne, Brewster, YD, Falmouth, Orleans, Chatham and Harwich do practically nothing after the season ends.

    “Capeman”

A close read of Brewster’s roster reveals that Robin Yount’s nephew is on there.

Lots of sophomores from big schools. Looks promising.

I am planning a future post on this.

Not sure about all of the sophomores…many of them didn’t play in the Cape League last summer and had “ok” summers in the Northwoods League, etc. Tyson Ross is a pitcher from Cal-Berkley and is a candidate for Team USA…just might be one of the best pitchers in the Pac-10.

David Cooper comes back & had a monster college world series…he could be drafted.

Be interesting to see how this team comes together. It will be one of the older teams on the Cape but if the talented of those sophomores end up signing and/or playing elsewhere (Team USA), it could be a long summer in Brewster.

Player to keep an eye on in Brewster is Brad Glenn from Arizona. Led Arz last year with 10 HR’s as a freshman.
