South Carolina freshman Lonnie Chisenhall – an inivited member of the Cotuit Kettleers this summer — lived up to his selection as the #1 freshman in college baseball this weekend. On Saturday in a tournament at UNC Wilmington, Chisenhall went 3 for 3 with 2 runs and 4 RBI against Western Kentucky.
According to the Gamecocks’ website, Chisenhall tied two school records. Can you say, shoeless Joe? On Friday against Oklahoma, Chisenhall went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI. He left 3 on base. He’s off to a .625 BA. Chisenhall, teammate of Justin Smoak (interviewed this past week on CodBall) batted 3rd on Friday and 2nd on Saturday. The Gamecocks moved to 2-0 in the tournament after defeating #35 Oklahoma.

There were a couple of other freshman that I noticed who also have had great starts. Cotuit pitcher Michael Meeke from Arizona State has pitched great and Wareham’s Blake Dean from LSU hit a 3-run homer in his first at bat. Ben Booker from Baylor, also playing for the Gatemen, is off to a fast start also..2nd on the team in BA…I believe he has 3 or 4 hits in his first 2 games. I’m sure there are others but this was what I noticed.
