Scouting Report: Wareham’s Scott Gorgen
Posted by Greg | Filed Under News |
My son and I took in today’s first game of a doubleheader between University of California Irvine and University of Washington.
Wareham’s Scott Gorgen (2-0, 4.50) of UC Irvine came out on the short end of a wonderful pitcher’s dual with Jorden Merry (1-1 3.97) of the UW Huskies. UCI beat the Huskies in game two to split the doubleheader.
Gorgen struck out 7, walked 5 and gave up a solo home run (off the Huskies’ dh) in 6 2/3 innings of work.
Merry also struck out 7 but walked just one and gave up no runs in 7 innings.
Gorgen’s first pitch was an 87-mile per hour fast ball. But it was his change-up, which featured good movement, that proved to be his out pitch. The 3 change-ups I saw for outs had great movement and froze several batters.
The ump helped him with some questionable low and outside strikes.
Gorgen had a great move to first base. One throw to first with a runner on looked to most of us to be a pick-off but the umps didn’t see it our way. After many repeated attempts Gorgen drew a balk in the 4th advancing Andy Lentz (the #2 batter) to second.
However, showing strength under pressure, he struck out the next 3 batters to retire the side, including one who worked the count full.
I found his fastball to tail into right-handed hitters.
Hyannis’ Francis Larson of the UCI Anteaters did not catch the first game but went 2-for-3 in the second game. His homer in the 2nd inning created 3 RBI.
CodBall will try to talk with both Gorgen and Larson tomorrow.

Good piece. Speaking of Wareham, I came across this while on the Cape last week. Thought you’d all find it interesting. It is about Cape League expansion, the All-Star game and the Wareham field improvements.
..of course, I forgot the link…here you go.

Thanks CapeMan… too bad there’s not a lot of new material in that article. It just seems like a re-hash with a bit added on Wareham’s field upgrades. Also, the article didn’t mention have any opinions on expansion from league officials (who, from what I understand, would say there is a very slim chance of expansion to New Bedford).
Wareham needs constant money every year to repair the outfield after football season (as does Falmouth).
I do find it interesting that Cotuit received a donation. I am hoping that Bourne and Brewster still have enough money to finish off their fan areas. Also, I guess Falmouth and Hyannis still have money left from the last donation they received. I haven’t been to Chatham recently, but I hope they finished off their nearby parking lot. Same goes for Y-D… And I think Orleans and Harwich are self-sufficient but I could be wrong.
I also find it interesting that the article was written by Zach Rocha. The lead singer of Rage Against the Machine was Zach de la Rocha.
All of the teams are self-sufficient…especially Wareham because of John Wylde’s deep pockets. It is just that since the Yawkey Foundation is willing to grant money for field improvements, why not take it. I believe the article said that the Wareham field improvements cost 186k and I believe the Wareham site said their infield and other things were done in the fall…before the Yawkey money. Clearly they have the cash. One of the books about the Cape League makes reference to the money that Mr. Wylde has and how Wareham; along with Cotuit & Chatham, are the most financially stable teams in the league. The Gatemen do many behind the scenes things that other teams don’t from what I understand from a former player. They pay for player’s airfare to and from the Cape, they feed the team after every game, they pay the interns, they bring the entire team to Fenway each season, hold a preseason dinner at a country club and have a season ending clambake.
As far as the Yawkey money goes…it is just a matter of time before Harwich and Orleans get their turn. Cotuit will put their money towards new bleachers. The Chatham parking lot is not owned by the A’s but rather, the town and therefore out of their control. I believe it is complete.
I think you saw comments only from John Wylde about New Bedford because he is the only CCBL executive willing to publicly support New Bedford. I’ve heard that the mayor can’t even get phone calls returned from the league…which is a mistake since he is very well connected from a political standpoint and is a former professional sports agent. Zach Rocha regularly covers the Cape League for the New Bedford Standard Times and I find his piece very informative throughout the season.
Very interesting stuff, CapeMan. I have read all the books, but there so many subtleties. I was not aware that Wareham paid their interns… I’m sure it’s not much, but that is impressive.
I do hope that the parking lot is complete in Chatham; It’s one of the best places to park. It was probably finished in September for the school year. It is amazing how well-run the Chatham A’s are that that only improvements one can think of are out of their hands. Streaming live video and online game archives would be nice!
Would the Kettleers replace the metal bleachers, or plow some trees down and put up another set on the 1st base side?
My understanding is that Cotuit is going to improve the spectator sections along first base since they only have a rather small section today. (personally, I like standing behind the 1st base dugout since you get such a good view of the game)
I don’t think the fact that Wareham pays interns was in one of the books…just something I found out from one of the players. I don’t think it is much..something like $3-400 for the summer.
A little birdy who I know from Mashpee told me that the entire league is considering streaming video of games through the websites. A few teams may video broadcast all of the games while some may broadcast only a few….stay tuned.
