CodBall Requests Interview with Gov. Richardson (Cotuit)
Posted by Greg | Filed Under News |
This weekend my inbox lit up with emails and alerts about New Mexico Gov. and U.S. Presidential candidate Bill Richardson, who played for the 1967 Cotuit Ketleers in the CCBL. Friends and search engines alike were connecting my passion for the Cape Cod Baseball League with a new column by The New York Times columnist David Brooks.
Brooks writes:
“On cultural issues, Richardson has the distinct advantage of not setting off any culture war vibes. He was in college in the late 1960s, but he was listening to the Beach Boys, not Janis Joplin. He was playing baseball in the Cape Cod League, not going to Woodstock. He idolized Humphrey, not McCarthy.”
This blog will attempt to stay blissfully distant from politics, but how could we write about candidates for the minor leagues and neglect candidates for the electoral big leagues?
Richardson did play for Cotuit but has backed off his claim that he was drafted by the old Kansas City Athletics after playing on the Cape. Richardson, who also served in the Clinton Administration, was a right handed pitcher for Tufts University in the 1960s.
I have emailed 3 of Gov. Richardson’s press and communications people requesting an interview, but have not yet heard back. My hope is that the Richardson staff (both campaign and Gov.’s office) will see the obvious importance of an interview with CodBall.com.
We have never called on you for your comments but here is a chance to cast your vote for the next CodBall Conversation!

Go for it Greg…this would be a great “get” for your website. I believe the Gov. threw out a pitch for the Kettleers last summer.
I’d actually like to see more of these types of interviews on the CCBL and team websites..past players, famous players, etc. The league has such a good resume, I just think they would take advantage of it a little more than they do.
I think you should interview Buster Posey of florida state. Buster was a great pitcher playing for yd, and was also solid at the plate and behind it.
nayr : Buster Posey is a good player and he is extremely versatile. He played in all 44 games for Y-D last summer. I don’t mean to take away from his accomplishments, but as for being “a great pitcher” and “solid” behind the plate, I have to point out that the league website shows that he played 5 games at third base and 35 games at shortstop. He pitched a total of 8 2/3 innings in 4 games. If he caught for Y-D in 2006, it was a minimal number of innings.
My comment pertains only to what he did at Y-D last year and does not factor in what he is doing at Florida State now, nor how he may be used when he returns to Y-D this year.
Greg,
Thank you for hosting this blog. This is Rob Zeytoonian, founder of the Zorian Bat Company in Cranston, RI. I would like to have a discussion on the use of wood bats in amateur baseball, and, specifically, as it pertains to the “quality of the game.” Cape Cod Baseball set a standard for amateur play using wood bats, and now every quality summer league is using wood bats. Do you have an opinion pertaining to the subject? Thank you.
Sincerely,
Rob Zeytoonian
