Cape League Announces New Grant Money

Newly Rennovated Wareham Gatemen InfieldWe’ve referenced field improvements often on CodBall, and this week the Cape Cod Baseball League announced that both Lowell Field (Cotuit) and Spillane Field (Wareham) will receive $150,000 each from the Yawkey Foundation to make improvements.

This will come as welcome news for players, who consistently complain about the poor conditions in Wareham (see CodBall Conversations).

The before and after photos of the field improvements in Wareham are stunning.

Wareham, where the lights literally went out in the midst of an ‘06 playoff game, is hosting the ‘07 season’s All-Star game.

Brewster, Bourne, Hyannis and Falmouth are prior benefeciaries of Yawkey grants. CCBL President Judy Scarafile is a trustee of Yawkey Foundation II.

The CCBL also announced back in January that the Fuller Family Foundation had donated to the league $45,000 per year for the next 5 years. A wonderful gift, but the details are vague. I plan to post on this separately.

Keep in mind that Wareham is also making or has made other improvements that include the entire replacement of the outfield this coming spring. I believe the CCBL website mentioned that the infield replacement for which the pictures represent was funded by the Gatemen and that the Yawkey money will go towards the outfield and some other projects such as safety fencing in front of the dugouts and fencing around the field.

Thanks, CapeMan. You are correct. The work underway in Wareham is very exciting. I can’t wait to take in some games there this summer.

I am starting a list of wifi hotspots in or near the various ballparks. Do you happen to know the nearest wifi to the field in Wareham?

Hi Greg. I realize you directed your question to CapeMan, but this is from the Gatemen website….. “Spillane Field is now a WiFi Hotspot courtesy of Cape.com and the Wareham Gatemen. Laptops & other wireless devices will have access to free WiFi internet access.”

Correct Dave….that’s how I was going to answer. I’ve used Cape.com hotspots before and you’ll need to get an ID the first time you login but then you are ready to go. I assume the Gatemen put this in last year…hopefully other teams will follow suit. What a great thing for the scouts, players, etc.

Thanks for the info CapeMan. I’ll do a little more research, but as for other towns or ballparks, I seem to remember reading that the whole town of Orleans is WiFi-ready.

You might be right about Orleans. You might want to go to Cape.com’s website. I think I read that they were trying to do that with a couple of towns on the Cape…at least in popular places like the Mashpee Commons, Downtown Hyannis, etc. I’m not too sure though.
