Home runs: How do Cape League Parks Compare?

y-d-champs.jpgThe average Cape Cod Baseball League ballpark saw 20.4 home runs last season (2006), up from a ballpark average of 17.8 in 2002. Thanks to a CodBall reader for pointing us (once again) to the very helpful statistics published by Wareham Gatemen GM John Wylde.

According to Wylde’s calculations, the Falmouth ballpark (Guv Fuller Field) in the western division and the Y-D ballpark (Red Wilson Field) in the eastern division produced the most home runs. Y-D, league champions last year, saw the most home runs of any team in 2006 (40). Falmouth saw 42 homeruns in 2004, the year they lost to Y-D in the playoffs.

The ballpark totals include homers hit by home and away teams. The Wareham website notes that both Bourne and Brewster played in new ballparks (though that did not seem to change their season totals much).

Total league home runs have increased steadily but not dramatically from 178 in 2002 to 204 in 2006.

Analysts and players alike generally agree that the CCBL is a pitcher’s league, but these numbers do lend credence to the argument that the league is increasingly becoming a hitter’s league.

Chatham, Falmouth, Hyannis and Y-D are the four parks that seem consistently to hover just around 20 home runs per season.

Bourne, Orleans and Harwich appear to see the fewest.

Hey, Harwich, if you hit more home runs maybe the selectmen of your town would more easily agree to give the team its usual $3,000 to defray team costs. The Cape Cod Chronicle reported this week on the upcoming Harwich annual meeting and the fact that there is a split decision over the town’s financial support for the Mariners.

    Isn’t that great stuff on the Gatemen site? I just noticed more updates to http://www.gatemen.org. They appear to be the first team to announce that video streaming is definately happening…plus they published for the second time homerun totals for their roster players now playing college ball.

    On another topic, I almost added a short piece this weekend about Lonnie Chisenhall. Sunday’s broadcast of the South Carolina v Florida game reminded me that we’ve not reported on Chisenhall’s dismisal from SC. According to published reports, Chisenhall (the top ranked Freshman) is charged with grand larceny along with another player.

    Chisenhall was on the Cotuit roster but Cotuit now shows his contract as being released. He was one of the players I had been looking forward to seeing.

    I noticed that as well on the Cotuit site…it be not be very “CCBL-like” to report on the issue specifically.
