Tryouts for Cape Cod Baseball League — Anyone going?
Posted by Greg | Filed Under News |
Can any of our loyal readers attend the June 2nd invitation-only tryouts at Spillane Field in Wareham? I am planning to order CodBall t-shirts one of these days to reward special correspondents. That’s a lame way of saying you’ll get a t-shirt if you volunteer.
I’d love to have a first-hand report of who looked good and why. Photos and video would be even better. Post them to You Tube and we can link from there.
Click on the CCBL website for details on when and where.

I’ve gone every other year and I will probably go this year. The only thing that would keep me away is if my daughter has a softball game that day.
I enjoy hanging around Spillane Field from 9:30 - 3:00 or so. I usually try to make conversation with some of the G.M.’s or other people representing the franchises. It can be interesting to find out about some of the wheeling and dealing that goes on, who was injured late in the college season, what so-and-so’s chances of sticking with Team USA are, etc.
Every so often there is an obvious stud player like Justin Maxwell. Most years it seems that teams are trying to fill a specific need after they find that one of their contract players made Team USA, or a player can not come to the Cape because of injury.
It can be pretty interesting when you see and hear a team offering a player a temp contract while that same player is trying to get a permanent contract from another team. The players are sometimes caught in a bind. Do they take the temp contract and hope to hook on with that team for the rest of the summer, or do they pass on the temp contract and hope that another team offers a permanent contract. There aren’t many permanent contracts handed out on tryout day, but there may be a few.
I don’t know if I should mention specific names, but there was a pitcher who played for Chatham a few years ago. The next year, he and his father were at the tryout with the father acting as his son’s “agent.” Chatham was willing to sign him to a temp contract but the dad wanted a permanent contract. Bottom line was, this pitcher was not offered a permanent contract by any team that day. He did sign a temp contract with another team, got released from that contract, signed another temp contract with yet another team and got released from that team too.
If anyone is going, it can be interesting to watch and hear what goes on near the press box on tryout day.
As we get closer to June 2 and I have a better idea if I can go, I will post here and see if I can get together with anyone else who may be planning to attend. If you are thinking of going, it can be a pretty good way to spend a few hours in the sun (hopefully the weather will be more cooperative than it was last year), but don’t expect to see many players from major programs.
I’ll be willing to go also…
I will try to be there also…I went last year for a bit and the weather was awful. In fact, I think it was postponed from Saturday to Sunday.
This will be a good chance to see the renovations at Spillane Field in Wareham. According to the Gatemen site, the new outfield is currently being installed but delayed due to the large storm in the Northeast. By June, I assume that field will look terrific.
Another interesting aspect of this tryout is the the CCBL invites the New England Collegiate Baseball League to attend and sign players that don’t otherwise sign to play on the Cape. Some may view this as helping out a competitor but it shows that the CCBL maintains its’ mission of doing what they can to help kids get to the next level.
I’d be happy to share info with your site. We focus on High School, CCBL and local sports. Let me know . . . I’m impressed with what you’ve done!
Ted
Ted, thanks. It would be great if you would share your info with CodBall. I will post later on how we can receive and publish everyone’s welcomed input and analysis.
