Hyannis in the Dark in ‘07
Posted by Andrew | Filed Under News |
With almost a month left before opening day, the league announced May 9th that Hyannis will not have its lighting system ready for the 2007 season. This moves all start times in Hyannis from 7pm to 5pm, and the two August games (and any playoff games) to 4:30pm.
This is the second year in a row that the Mets have promised lights. Last year, rain was cited as the reason for delaying the installation and all 2006 schedules were misprinted with 7pm start times in Hyannis. This year, “continuing environmental concerns and rising installation costs” have delayed the installation.
The Mets organization is disappointed but assures us that the project will be completed. “We feel a great deal of disappointment, but maintain the collective positive energy to complete the project,” said Mets President Tino DiGiovanni.

Andrew, in a related story, the Barnstable Patriot newspaper reported this week that John Paul II High School, site of McKeon Field and home of the mets, is becoming a a Fall River Diocesan school.
The article (link below) says that diocese is working out a “viable useage agreement with the Town of Barnstable.”
So I wonder if the delays have anything to do with this?

A “little birdie” told me that it was the fault of the contractor. The cement that holds the poles at the base was not poured in time and in general, the contractor did not manage their time very well. My understanding is that heavy equipment is needed to go on the field to do the installation and that the time it woud take to repair that damage would not have been enough because the contractor has been so late getting to the cement pouring.
You know, it is amazing to me that Hyannis plus other franchises like Falmouth, who have received Yawkey Funds, have not exactly done anything with that money and/or have mismanaged their projects. Wareham, on the other hand, has aggressively put in a new infield, new fencing, a new well, new irrigation and a brand new outfield. Wareham JUST got their money and are done with these major projects. What is Falmouth’s plan?
Greg: Good find. It is very strange that the school and the town have not already worked out the “viable usage agreement.” After all, the future high school matched the Yawkey Foundation II donation.
It sounds like CapeMan has the best info on this… everyone make sure to read his comment.
Wareham has definitely impressed me this off-season, and I am looking forward to my trips up route 6 this summer. Anyone have any info on what Falmouth did with the 2006 grant? Cotuit and Wareham both received their grants this year (March 15th) as part of Yawkey Foundation II.
