Scouting Report: Cal State’s Cooper, Cutler and Ross

white-caps-logo.jpgSEATTLE — I had a chance this weekend to watch two of the three Cal Bear stars who have been invited to play this summer on the Cape for the Brewster Whitecaps. Sophomore 1B/LHP David Cooper, sophomore catcher Charlie Cutler started this weekend for Cal against the Washington Huskies. A third, sophomore RHP Tyson Ross (6-6, 2.49 ERA) got the win on Friday night and Cooper and Cutler combined for 8 hits and 3 RBIs during the 3 game series.

Cooper (.393) was 0-4 on Saturday, though he hit the ball hard. He did hit well on both Friday and Sunday. I did not see anything spectacular around first base, but he looked comfortable there.

Cutler (.309) had a full-count bloop single on Saturday when I saw him, and had two hits on Friday and another on Sunday. Behind the plate, he blocked the well especially with runners at 1st and 2nd and a wild pitcher on the mound. I thought he looked a little slow getting the throw down to second. On Saturday he threw the ball out into center field and then on a second stolen base made a better throw but not in time.

Incidentally, Junior Elliot Cribby (2-2) who pitched last summer for the Chatham A’s was sharp in 8 innings striking out 5 and walking just one. He allowed two runs.

The Bears clinched 4th in the PAC-10 on Friday night and await news about their fate in the NCAA tournament.
