Day 1: Wareham @ Falmouth
Posted by Andrew | Filed Under Games |
Homer may look happy here, but he can’t be too thrilled about the 9th inning 2-5 loss at home in Falmouth tonight (box score). There was impressive pitching on both sides with no earned runs until Wareham’s comeback in the 9th. Gatemen starter Wade Miley (SE Louisana) fanned eight, and his offense allowed the only two runs of the night for Falmouth.
The story of the night was Beamer Weems (Baylor), who pulled a Doug Mirabelli by arriving on the field early in the game (but not in a police car). He reportedly forgot his cleats and had to run back to his car to get them. In the 9th inning, Weems scored the 4th run of the night for the Gatemen. CodBall Conversation star Preston Claiborne (Tulane) was unfortunately the losing pitcher for the Falmouth Commodores.
Click here for some photos from this game and also the Bourne @ Cotuit game before. And here is a short video I shot of Wade Miley pitching:

Andrew, your photo of the sunset from Guv Fuller field in Falmouth is spectacular. I would hang that one above the fireplace!
[...] Day 1: Wareham @ Falmouth [...]
I was at this game as well. Good pitching from both starters…I thought Falmouth pulled starter Kyle Gibson from Missouri too early….and Wareham’s “suddenly on the roster” starter Wade Miley from S. Louisiana was real good…hit 92 on the radar gun. (This lefty might be worth keeping an eye on) Both teams struggled offensively but you can tell that Wareham will hit…Dominic de la Osa hitting leadoff and he hit 20 homeruns for Vandy this season, Dustin Dickerson from Baylor is a big kid and just crushed that double in the 9th to drive in the winning run..there are many more hitters but they were the highlights for me. I think Matt Nuzzo from Falmouth will be a sleeper at 2B and Brett Grafey was lights out in relief.
On the field and fan experience…I thought Falmouth showed some first game “getting organized” signs; perhaps a sign of having a new GM (Dan Dunn). The announcer didn’t give you the school for any of the hitters and he called Wareham the “Gatekeepers” at the start. The concessions were different and looked like a carnival. A number of kids were playing inside Falmouth’s hitting cage; something that I’m sure the coach wouldn’t have liked. The lighting is terrible…3 or 4 lights out in center field, a couple near home plate and more down right field…I had a hard time following the ball at times. The scoreboard operator simply forgot to add balls and strikes many times. Homer seemed on his game!! Good crowd for a chilly night; even a good vistiting crowd from Wareham. No safety fencing in front of either dugout; something I thought was mandatory by the league this year. The Falmouth infield looked terrific..no more “paths” from the plate the mound or from the plate to the dugouts. I noticed Wareham pitcher Matt Petiton (UNC) charting pitches and doing radar behind the plate. Seemed like the entire Falmouth team was sitting outside the dugout..would have made for a good picture. New Falmouth hats I think..white..will get real dirty I bet. I noticed former Falmouth GM Chuck Stertavant (SP?) at the game.
Amazing what you notice at a simple 2 hour and 20 minute baseball game!
Thanks CapeMan… I did notice many of things you said… the carnival concession stand is a huge upgrade. Before (as you know), they would cook everything and have it sitting there. There were definitely quite a few light bulbs out in the lighting system, especially in center (2/6 on one of the poles). Great turnouts yesterday at both Cotuit and Falmouth. All my usual parking spots were taken!
I will be snapping photos all weekend long. I didn’t bring my battery charger down from Newton so I was a bit conservative last night. I shot some video though, which I will add to each post today.
Same old Falmouth.
Andy…..the end of this game made me want to punch you in the face.
