Day 3: Chatham @ Orleans
Posted by Andrew | Filed Under Games |
The Chatham-Orleans rivalry kicked the year off on Father’s Day and it was a great way to end the weekend. I parked my beach chair on the 1st base side, and was sitting next to Nate Freiman’s (Duke) family.
The final score of the game was 8-2 Chatham, with a big 4-run 9th inning by the A’s to seal the win. The star of the Chatham offense was Virginia Tech’s Sean O’Brien, who nailed a 365 foot 2-run shot to right-center in the 3rd inning. Orleans’ Mark Sobolewski (Miami) was the star of the Cardinals offense with 3 hits (including a double), a stolen base, and an RBI.
The crowd in Orleans was a little light, especially for a Chatham game. This could have been due to father’s day and the threat of a passing thunderstorm. Also, it is still early in the season. Mr. Cardinal, the Orleans mascot, is due to arrive in July. He is currently living in Maryland, according to an Orleans 50/50 ticket distributor.
The new scoreboard at Eldredge Park looks great, and there is also new terracing on the 3rd base side. It was all mentioned tonight that there will be terracing behind the home plate area.

Here is a video of Sean O’Brien getting a hit:

A couple of other observations on the game tonight.
Lots of bunts. Eric Reese was the ninth bunder in the 7th and the first to reach first. I think Cordoso followed with an attempted bunt.
I just posted about USC’s Robert Stock. The two A’s pitchers — Milone and Couture — are also USC guys.
Did I hear that Jericho Jones may be out for the season? I may have gotten that wrong. In Jericho’s place in the lead off spot today was another Jones — Marcus. Marcus apparently had a big catch in the outfield.
Likewise Orleans catcher Tignor threw out A’s third baseman Pappenhause at 2nd base in the 2nd inning.
Sounds like Chatham is still awaiting a lot of regular players.
Jericho is going back to Texas to have further tests on his nagging groin injury that he’s had since Feb 18th.
