Day 9: Around the Cape League & Wareham @ Cotuit

cotuit-hat.JPGNow into its second week, The Cape Cod Baseball League is starting to tighten up. The two teams falling furthest behind — Falmouth and Wareham — are also the only two teams according to my review of rosters that are still awaiting players from the College World Series (Oregon State beat North Carolina in game 1).

Falmouth is waiting for two Oregon State players, John Wallace (OF) and Joey Wong (Inf). Wareham also is awaiting 2 players — Jason Ogata (2B) of OSU and Mike Cavassini (OF) of North Carolina. Matt Petiton of North Carolina has joined Wareham, but was little help in his 1/3 inning start against Cotuit last night.

Whether these players are enough to improve both team’s 1-6 start is hard to tell but it is interesting that they both are suffering in the Western Division cellar while some of their potential stars duke it out in Omaha, NE.

The leaders

YD continues to have the league’s best record even after its second loss Saturday night to Brewster. Hyannis moves into first place in the Western Division, followed closely by Cotuit (see Saturday game notes below)

Some larger crowds showed up on Saturday. Wareham, Orleans and Harwich are now averaging more than 1,200 fans with Y-D and Cotuit hovering just below 1,000.

Gordon Beckham of Y-D remains the batting leader (.424/.788 SLG/3 HRs). Kevin Hoef of Bourne is right there with him. It’s nice to see Matt Hague (Washington) of Falmouth among the leaders. We watched him all season at Washington. Matt doesn’t even appear on Falmouth’s official roster yet so I’m not sure when he was added. He’s batting .381.

Yesterday I watched Cotuit’s Mike Bianucci, who leads in stolen bases with seven. He’s a big kid who is also quick on the base pads.

I’m not sure the Howe Sports Data information used by the Cape is correct on pitching. Doesn’t Garrett Richards of Cotuit (Oklahoma) have 3 saves after last night? The top 10 list for pitchers seems incomplete. Shinaberry (Bewer), Lindblom (Cotuit) and Doyle (Y-D) are shown as having two wins each, which seems right. Danny Farquhar of Harwich, who I wrote about earlier is the strikeout leader with 16, followed closely by Ryan Cook (Brewster) and Wade Miley (Wareham).

Wareham @ Cotuit (6-8)

This game jumped off to a fast 4-4 start through the 3rd. Curtis Dupart batting in the one-hole for Cotuit homered in the fourth, and Wareham was mostly shut down until they scored 2 in the 9th against reliever Richardson of Cotuit. Cotuit moved into a close second place behind Hyannis with the win.

Wareham was not without chances. Seth Henry (Tulane) struck out looking with the bases loaded in the third. Check-out our podcast for my interview with Seth and some of his Tulane teammates.

A few standouts to mention. Bianucci stole his 7th base. He also drove Wareham pitcher Sam Whelan to distraction when he got on in the 2nd. Richards got is 2nd (or was it 3rd) save, and Caleb Joseph, a catcher from Lipscomb University, had timely hitting including a two-RBI double in the 1st. Caleb did not appear on Cotuit’s roster last night because he apparently is a late add after he was cut by Falmouth. I suspect he may move up in the batting order from last night’s #8 hole.

Freshman catcher and phenom Robert Stock (Cotuit) apparently is injured.

Dominic de la Osa of Wareham (Vanderbilt) had a 3-run homer in the first.

A couple of technical difficulties to mention in Cotuit. The otherwise terrific broadcast failed just after the game and made the post-game summary impossible. And I could not make my phone connection to the Wareham-Cotuit game work. Finally, the Cotuit scoreboard apparently is out for now.

    Orleans is still awaiting Rob Catapano from the CWS, and I know Chatham is still awaiting a few players from UNC as well

    Chatham is waiting for the arrival of Tim Federowicz (catcher), Kyle Seager (infielder) and Alex White (pitcher) - all of whom could be key contributors when they arrive on the Cape.

    i have not heard if zack putnam has made it to chatham yet. does anyone have any information?

    Putnam was scheduled to arrive in Chatham yesterday (6/24). Not sure if he was in uniform tonight or not, but the A’s did drop Collin McHugh from their active roster today, presumably to make room for Putnam.
    Also, Travis Beausoleil played his last game for Chatham this evening. My guess is this may mean that Nathan Moreau has finally arrived from Georgia.

    After checking further, Zac Putnam was added to Chatham’s “active” roster today, taking the place of Collin McHugh.
    I think it may be the middle of next week before the three UNC players arrive in Chatham. As a point of reference, under similar circumstances last year, Robert Woodard made his debut on July 4 after arriving from the College World Series.

    Collin McHugh is now on the Wareham roster…he pitched last night against Orleans. I think you may see other players arrive this week from teams the fell just short of the finals…Arizona State, Rice, etc.

    has Petiton been traded from Wareham? I don’t see him on th roster.
