Cape Coaches Get Drafted, Too
Posted by Greg | Filed Under News |
Players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are scouted and drafted all season, and occasionally we read about Cape coaches moving on as well.
We wrote earlier this year about Cotuit manager Mike Roberts being under consideration for a couple of coaching jobs.
I recently stumbled across an article in a Michigan newspaper about former Hyannis Mets coach Brian Murphy who is now head coach for the Battle Creek Bombers of the Northwoods League, also considered a top summer league.
With the growth of summer leagues around the country, it makes me wonder if the Cape will become an exclamation point on a coach’s resume to lead teams in other summer leagues.

I think if Mike Roberts took the Cambell job; he’d give up the Cotuit job. Division I baseball is a year around job for those coaches and they simply wouldn’t have the time to dedicate to the CCBL. With the possibility of playing in the College Regionals and World Series, I don’t think you’d see a Cape GM hiring a coach that might not show up until July.
Rather, I think you’ll continue to see coaches that are known as great “teachers” of the game that while not a high profile colleges or other schools, are well known in certain specialties such as hitting, pitching, etc. After all, the goal of the league is to prepare players for the next level.
South Carolina Baseball Announces the Hiring of Sammy Esposito
Former NC State Letterwinner to Join Gamecock Coaching Staff
Aug. 9, 2007
Columbia, S.C. - South Carolina head baseball coach Ray Tanner has announced the hiring of Sammy Esposito as Volunteer Assistant for the baseball team. Esposito comes to Columbia after two seasons on the Georgia Southern staff. A four-year letterwinner at NC State, Esposito is the son of former NC State head coach Sam Esposito, who coached Tanner during his playing days. Tanner also served on Esposito’s staff from 1981-87 before becoming his successor with the Wolfpack.
“I’m thrilled to add Sammy to our coaching staff,” said head coach Ray Tanner. “He is a great young coach, who will bring a wealth of knowledge and passion to our program.”
In addition to his two seasons with Georgia Southern, Esposito has also been involved with several baseball camps in the Southeast Region including at South Carolina, NC State and Richmond. Esposito is currently serving as an assistant coach in the Cape Cod League for the Yamouth-Dennis Red Sox. Y-D begins the Cape Cod playoffs on Friday and enters postseason play with the best record in the league at 31-12-1.
“I’m very excited to join Coach Tanner’s staff at the University of South Carolina,” said Sammy Esposito. “This is a tremendous opportunity to work with great coaches, great players and one of the best programs in the country.”
Esposito graduated from NC State with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. He attended Broughton High School in Raleigh, N.C. where he was a two-time All-Conference selection in baseball
