Day 39: Wareham @ Falmouth

thebeau.jpgIt was great to be back in Falmouth tonight for the Wareham Gatemen-Falmouth Commodores game . I’ve got a lot to report, but first the game itself.

All-star Kyle Gibson (Missouri) gave up three runs but held on to get the win with strong run support in the 6th when the Commodores broke a 3-3 tie by adding on three more runs, which was all that was needed. The 6-3 win on Tuesday night improves the Commodores to 18-16 to keep pace with West-leading Bourne.

The Commodores bullpen was strong. Kyle Thebeau (Texas A&M) threw in the low 90s for strikes. [Note: Kyle is pictured here with this post.] Luke Burnett (La. Tech) closed and got the save throwing mid-90 fastballs and a curve to retire the side in the 9th.

Falmouth used small and large ball to get the win. Several Falmouth players bunted to advance runners, and Conor Gillaspie (Wichita State) solo homered in the 4th. I was standing with the Falmouth brass when he went yard and let’s just say they were excited.

A few game notes:

  • I picked up from some officials that the annual Falmouth Road Race (8/12) could interfere with the playing of a Commodores playoff game if they in fact continue in second place. It seems the road race registration is scheduled for Saturday 8/11 at the adjacent recreation center and would interfere with a possible playoff game at Falmouth’s home field. More to come on this.
  • Are the pinstriped pants new for the Commodores? I can’t remember. Those pinstripes did help tonight. Both Wareham and Falmouth wore deep red or crimson jersies so the pinstripes helped distinguish one from the other.
  • The home plate umpire tonight took a pitch in what appeared to be the stomach or groin area. Given the loud crack several in the press box guessed the ball may have hit his protective cup. He groaned when hit and fell to the ground, remaining there for several minutes while trainers from both dugouts ran to him. He received applause when he got up and finished the game.
  • I’ll have to post another time about the ribbing Joey Wong takes from his teammates for his apparently super-human plays at short-stop.

I was also there last night….Josh Phegley, starting West Division catcher for Wareham, broke his hand when he punched the dugout wall after a strikeout. I was in the stands on the 3rd base side and many of one of the coaches in the bullpen was discussing. Check the box score…Bryan Garrity entered the game at some point.

I just checked the Gatemen website and they now have a 3rd catcher on the roster.

If Phegley has suffered a self-induced injury, that was pretty foolish. Dugout walls usually win that battle. Phegley was going to be the starting catcher for the West in the all-star game.
The new catcher on the Wareham roster is Kelly Weems. Weems plays for Cooper Farris at Mississippi Gulf Coast. Per the Wareham Media Guide, he took a medical redshirt year because he had Tommy John surgery. He was already in Wareham this summer as the Gateman Equipment Manager. I think we might be looking at two firsts here. Kelly Weems may be the first Equipment Manager to be put on an active roster and the Gatemen must be the first team with two players named “Weems” on the team !

Phegly scratched from the All-Star game.

Well, I guess Phegley may have just proved that the CCBL is indeed competitive.

Good point Andrew…and I think it also is an example that it might mean “just a bit more” to kids that are not as highly touted as some others. Phegley had a bad year at Indiana but showed a lot of passion this year in Wareham.

It was a pleasure meeting you. We hope to see you around the ball park again soon.
