The Hyannis Mets are still in the playoff race!

Falmouth lost tonight 1-4 at Doran Park in Bourne. The game lasted 8 innings and was cut short due to darkness after a game ending Bourne 6-3 double-play assisted by Addison Maruszak (South Florida). The Braves scored 4 runs on 10 hits with 1 error. The Commodores scored 1 run on 6 hits with 3 errors. Steven Hensley (Elon) got the win and his record goes up to 4-2 with a 3.70 ERA and 35 strikeouts on the season. Kyle Thebeau (Texas A&M) got the loss and moves to 1-1 after his first start of the year. The Braves are now 21-0 when leading after 7 innings. Ben Guez (William & Mary) went 4-4 and was the “Subway of Buzzards Bay” player of the day. Guez started the year as a temporary player and was a member of the Western Division All-Stars. Guez commented in a postgame interview, “it’s day like this that show you that we have what it takes to make it to the playoffs and to make a run and hopefully win a championship.” Thanks to Andrew Grover (”Voice of the Braves”, Head Intern) for the post-game interview with Guez and the run-down. Listen to the archived game at http://baseball.cape.com/ (note: the game is in two pieces due to a technical error).

mets-logo.jpgAll eyes are now upon Hyannis. The Mets need to pull out a win at home on Tuesday night vs. the Wareham Gatemen. If they lose, it’s all over. If they win, it all comes down to the Hyannis @ Falmouth 7:00pm matchup at Arnie Allen Diamond (Guv Fuller Field on Wednesday). Winner takes all. Rain is currently threatening play on Wednesday night and could force a delay or postpone the game till Thursday night. If Hyannis ties Wareham on Tuesday night and beats Falmouth on Wednesday night, then the teams will re-match on Thursday night to determine who gets the playoff spot. Very exciting.

Guez has been a pleasure to watch this season. Those kids that are not expected to play a full season in the CCBL more often than not have more passion than the signed players.

CapeMan you said a mouthfull. Not only do they have a great deal of passion they are hungry and grateful to have had even a short (2 week) opportunity to play let alone get signed for the entire season like Ben Guez and some of the others the Braves have.

John Schiffner gets new deal with Chatham. Chatham gets viewed as the “Yankees of the Cape Cod League at times” and there may be a sense of entitlement in A’s country, but this is well deserved….take a look.

That is very good news. I have spoken to John Schiffner on a couple occasions and he is a gentleman. After a playoff game two years ago, I introduced him to my son and he chatted baseball with him for a bit. They spoke briefly about the baseball coach at my son’s school and about my son’s favorite player (Jermaine Clark, Chatham, ‘96) who played for the A’s and had a couple stops in the major leagues.
John Schiffner is a great ambassador for the Chatham A’s and the Cape Cod Baseball League.
