Divisional Playoff Schedule Announced
Posted by Dave | Filed Under News |
The Cape Cod Baseball League has announced the schedule for the divisional playoffs.
In the East: Y-D will host Chatham on Friday, 8/10 @ 3:00. On Saturday, 8/11, the scene shifts to Chatham for a 7:00 game. If a third game is necessary, the Red Sox will host that game at 3:00 on Sunday, 8/12 at 3:00.
The situation is still not cut and dried in the West. Falmouth and Hyannis continue to battle for second place. What is certain is that the Bourne Braves will host the Commodores or Mets in Game 1 on Friday at 3:00. If necessary, the Braves will host Game 3, on Sunday also at 3:00. If Falmouth claims second place, they will host Game 2 at 8:00 on Saturday. The later start time is likely due to the potential conflict around Fuller Field and the Falmouth Recreation Center between the ballgame and the pre-race activities for the Falmouth Road Race (as reported earlier by Greg). If Hyannis overtakes Falmouth, the Mets will host Game 2 on Saturday at 3:00.
If Falmouth beats Bourne this afternoon, or if Hyannis loses to Wareham tomorrow, the Commodores will clinch second place. A Falmouth loss combined with a Hyannis win would set up a head-to-head matchup between the Commodores and Mets at Fuller Field on Wednesday to see who goes to the playoffs. A tie in either today’s or tomorrow’s games could lead to the need for a play-in game between the two teams on Thursday.

To my knowledge, Bourne and YD have not broadcast a lot of live video webcasts this season unlike most other teams. Do you think they will step up during the playoffs?
In speaking with their broadcast intern, it appears that Bourne is planning on having video broadcasting for the playoffs.
Strictly a guess based on each team’s track record, but I would say things won’t be any different in the playoffs. I hope my guess is wrong.
Bourne beat Falmouth tonight in Bourne 4-1 in 8 innings. (Thunderstorms were here strong so I’m surprised they got it in.)
Andrew and I were just talking by phone to discuss the scenarios. Bottomline is that Hyannis and Falmouth will meet Wed. for a regularly scheduled finale on Wed. Winner take all. A tie would force a playoff on Thursday from my understanding.
See you in Falmouth on Wed!
Wednesday’s game between Hyannis and Falmouth will decide who claims second place only if Hyannis beats Wareham tomorrow. If the Gatemen surprise the Mets, Falmouth will clinch second place while enjoying an off day. As noted by Greg, if Hyannis and Wareham play to a tie, and Hyannis beats Falmouth on Wednesday, that would necessitate a play-in game between the Commodores and Mets on Thursday.
Wareham suffered through a ten game losing streak earlier this season and after losing to Chatham this morning, they have now lost 11 of their last 12 games. Jeremy Bleich is scheduled to pitch against Hyannis tomorrow and Bleich has pitched fairly well. He is 3-2 with a 2.82 ERA on a team with a record of 13-29.
Great clarification thanks
I think Hyannis will defeat Wareham easily. The Gatemen offense is non-existant and this team has already “gone home”. Blake Dean has left the team because of a family illness; leaving this offense with virtually no power. (unless Luke Murton can do what he did during the HR contest)

I agree with you CapeMan. It seems Wareham checked out awhile ago. When they play a home game, the local paper assigns a reporter to those games. I have read some of Cooper Farris’ quotes after the games on SouthCoastToday.com and he hasn’t pulled any punches. He hasn’t said that the team quit, but his frustration certainly is evident.
I think the only thing Wareham can pin their hopes on today is to get a well pitched game from Bleich.
I know it happened just a few years ago where a team (Hyannis ?) had two double-digit losing streaks in one season but in a 44 game season, isn’t it hard to believe that one team can have a ten game losing streak and now be in the midst of losing eleven of their last twelve ? Before the season started, I looked at the Wareham roster and thought they were loaded. I would have picked them to be a playoff team which shows how much I know !
The big winner in this mad dash for the final spot is Bourne. If Hyannis beats Wareham today, Falmouth and Hyannis will have to use their aces on Wednesday and they wouldn’t be available for the first round.
Meanwhile, Bourne can sit back, get rested and ready to try and beat a very physically and mentally tired Commodore or Met team.
Good point by Backstop…Bourne should be ready but losing M. Moreland is a huge loss. Experience and talent.
And Dave… I’ve read some of those quotes as well. He also does a postgame show on their broadcast and has declined to come up to the pressbox a couple of times after some tough losses. Their list of players lost is remarkable… Diallo Fon, Lance Sewell, Mike Minor, Jordy Mercer, Ike Davis, Matt Langwell, Josh Phegley, Riley Boening, Robert Lara, Scott Gorgen, …there may be more.
Moreland is a loss offensively, but they are better of defensively without him, IMHO (although Moreland is a good lefty out of the bullpen). Bourne’s success in the playoffs will be determined by how well DJ Mitchell and Rick Zagone throw in the first round.
Mitchell is pitching well as of late and Zagone just pitched a gem. If I’m Bourne, I want to play Hyannis. No disprespect to the Mets but I would not want to face Aaron Crow in Game 1 and have to potentially win two in a row.
CapeMan, that is a lot of talent that you listed. Minor, Boening, Gorgen, Mercer and Lara never made it to Wareham. Combine that with losing the other players during the season, and they weren’t playing with the roster they expected to have.
Every team loses players before the season begins, and during the season, but it seems the Gatemen got hit harder than most teams.
Backstop, if Mitchell and Zagone pitch nearly as well as they did in their last outings, the Braves will be tough to beat.
Capeman
If Crow has to pitch Wednesday or Thursday, they wouldn’t see him at all. Hyannis is the hottest team in the league right now, so I think Bourne has to be careful what they wish for. Either way, the Braves are going to have to continue to hit and cut down on all their errors in the field.
I think Wareham had a combination of normal, preseason player losses and bad luck during the season. Sewell signed after beginning the season and Lanwell got hurt….these guys would have made a huge difference in the bullpen; if not in the starting rotation.
Ike Davis was a huge loss offensively. The rest of the team has no excuse…De La Osa was maybe the most diapointing player in the league this season. (I would have named him a pre-season MVP candidate) Beamer Weems didn’t hit with any power, Dustin Dickerson and Ben Booker from Baylor were major disapointments and Michael Demperio just didn’t show the talent that was expected. Regardless of the talent that didn’t show or went home, this team as an offensive disaster.
