Mother Nature Delays Start of Cape League Playoffs

Posted by Dave | Filed Under News |

A rainy Friday on Cape Cod has delayed the start of the Cape League playoffs. The playoff schedule has been pushed back by one day. The only other change to the schedule is, since there will not be a conflict with the Falmouth Road Race registrations, Game 2 in the West will be played at the usual start time of 7:00pm on Sunday.

My understanding is that the season must be completed on or before August 15. The NCAA will never grant an exception to that rule. I’m wondering if this could cause some scrambling in the league this year ? If either divisional series goes to a third game, the championship series would not begin until Tuesday, 8/14. Just conjecture on my part, but if the championship series goes to Game 3, this could lead to Games 2 and 3 being played on Wednesday, 8/15.

In 1996, Chatham and Falmouth squared off for the championship under similar circumstances. Game 2 was played in Chatham in the afternoon. Game 3 was scheduled to be played later that evening in Falmouth. Chatham won the championship by winning the afternoon game, and thus prevented both teams from having to head to Fuller Field for a deciding third game. None of this will matter if the divisional playoffs both end in two games. I’m sure other options are being discussed.

Not that I trust the meteorologists, but the forecast is calling for a chance of rain on Monday. I’m getting ahead of things, but if that happens, things could become more interesting regarding the schedule.

    Don’t give up on Bourne.

Timely and clutch hitting has been a plus all year long.

The batting order, although dampened by the loss of several players still has the pop of the bat and keen eye at the plate to make a difference against a tough Falmouth rotation.

Bourne’s pitching has been better than average all season and the defense is finally playing stellar baseball.

Field manager Harvey Shapiro and his generals have done a good job with the team and the Braves are ready to rock and roll.

The first game will take place tomorrow afternoon at Doran Park (3:00) 2:45 for the Bourne Braves Pre Game show. We will attempt to provide you all with Video as well. “Don’t quote me on that though.”

We will than travel to Falmouth for a 7:00 showdown with the Commodores on Sunday evening. This affair will not go against the Falmouth Road Race.

The August 15th rule doesn’t exist anymore. There won’t be any need to play doubleheaders unless the rain washes out the entire weekend.

Colonel Sanders, do you know any more info? I was unaware that the August 15th rule didn’t exist anymore… is there a new date?

In today’s Cape Cod Times, Cape League Commissioner Paul Galop says the “only current limitations on summer leagues is that players cannot play past the first day of fall classes.”
I am surprised that the NCAA did away with the old ruling that all summer league seasons had to be completed by August 15. When that rule was in effect, I was told by a few people that the NCAA would never waive that deadline.
Looks like today is going to be a great day for baseball on the Cape !
