Red Sox Beat A’s, On To Finals
Posted by Dave | Filed Under Games |
The Y-D Red Sox are East Division champions for the third time in the last four years. The Red Sox defeated the Chatham A’s 4-0, in front of a large crowd at Veterans Field. The many Red Sox followers in the crowd had the “Let’s go Red Sox” chant going and they were not disappointed. In the second straight errorless game in this series, the Red Sox only needed three swings to produce all four runs. Y-D lead the league with 41 homeruns during the regular season and their power was on display this evening.
Three homeruns paved the way. Gordon Beckham started the scoring in the first inning, hitting a two run shot. The score remained 2-0 into the eighth inning when Nick Romero hit a solo shot to rightfield. Another solo homerun off the bat of Jason Castro in the ninth inning was more than enough for Y-D.
Understandably, everyone focuses on Y-D’s offense. In addition to being the homerun leaders, the Red Sox lead the league with a .277 team batting average. With so much attention on the offense, it seems their pitching is almost overlooked at times. The Red Sox were second in the league with a team ERA of 2.82, while issuing a league-low 127 walks. That pitching certainly came through in the sweep of the A’s as Y-D held Chatham to just three runs.
The Red Sox move on to the championship series and they will attempt to win their third Cape League championship in four years. Is there such a thing as a “dynasty” in a summer league where rosters can change 90% from one season to the next ? That’s open to debate, but the recent success that G.M. Jim Martin and Manager Scott Pickler have had is remarkable. The Red Sox organization has come a long way in the past ten or so years.
The Red Sox seem to be in good shape to match the solid pitching of the Falmouth Commodores in what will be a repeat of the 2004 finals. Y-D should have Jerry Sullivan (3-0; 0.56), Trevor Holder (4-1; 0.89) and Terry Doyle (6-3; 2.35) available to start against the Commodores. It all gets underway on Monday afternoon at 3:00 at Wilson Field

Dave, thanks for the report. Andrew and I caught Bourne and Falmouth tonight.
Great writeup. Chatham has a great ballpark and it was packed tonight. For most of the game we sat in the “bleachers” (a.k.a the grassy knoll) in right center. The 9th inning Castro home run landed right behind us. We were leaning on the outfield fence at the time and it landed halfway up the hill filled with fans. Some A’s fans chanted “throw it back” as they had the inning before when Romero hit one. The 8th inning home run was thrown back - this one was not. The play-by-play anouncer was really animated (I’m not sure where one gets to hear the broadcast-I heard it by standing behind him in the bottom of the 9th.) A fun night.
I believe that was the Y-D webcast. The home teams are in the press boxes. I listened to Chatham - one of the best in the league. Are you guys going to do an post about the new broadcasts - season one being almost in the books with the video upgrades - a look back. I thought it went very well.
Well, they’re out, but one more Go A’s! for the season.
Don: Thank-you for the kind words and for your contribution to this post.
I agree that Chatham has a great ballpark. It is my favorite Cape League park. A summer evening spent at Veterans Field is always a good take (unless the fog rolls in !) and with a playoff crowd packing the place, it makes it that much more special.
The announcers that you heard can be picked up by going to the Cape League website (capecodbaseball.org) and clicking on “Internet and Phone Access,” or you can go to each team’s website and follow the instructions from there in order to watch the video or listen to the broadcasts over the internet or on the telephone.
Regarding the Chatham broadcast…. They apparently decided to ditch Cape.com because as I logged in to watch the game last night, I discovered that Chatham decided to move over to Teamline instead of Cape.com for the playoffs. Didn’t the league decide to go with Cape.com? Anyway, if that is what they decided…fine…but I thought the piece on their website announcing this fact was a real shot at Cape.com. Perhaps this was intentional but talking about how they would now have reliable video and talking up their long relationship just seemed unprofessional.
The Chatham broadcasters are a joke. I’ll just leave it at that. I think this YD team may be the single best team I can ever remember on the Cape. The only reason why they’ll beat Falmouth in 2 is because they can’t beat them in 1. Sweep city.
Colonel….I’m with you 100% about the Chatham broadcasters!! I did my own little review about the league broadcasts a while back and I think those guys think that the broadcast is about the Chatham broadcasters…it is a joke!! You look at their website and you’d think the lead broadcaster was Al Michaels!! This latest move was just typical of how they operate.
Regarding YD…it is just a shame that the season has been scheduled so late. Aaron Crow should be able to pitch and Connor Gilespie should be able to play…that is a huge advantage to YD. YD is probably better anyway but just the same…..
YD is a monster. I can’t see a scenario where Falmouth beats them. They were 0-4 vs. the Red Sox this year with all those guys.
Regarding the A’s broadcasters, not only are they pretty bad once you take away all the bells and whistles of their technology, but their arrogance is astounding. They come into visiting ballparks like conquering kings and think they are entitled to whatever they want.
As arrogant as they were this year, they were twice as bad last year with that other kid who looked in the mirror and saw Jack Buck.
You are right on Colonel!
You guys couldn’t be farther off-base. I guess each person is entitled to their own opinion, but, Chatham is soooooo good when it comes to the technical aspects. I’m from Philly and go to school at Missouri so I can you a thing or two about broadcasting. Chatham does an awesome job - they’re broadcasters are prep’d well and knowledgable and able to do all the little things right (like not falling behind the action). What’s wrong with their website? We should hold it against them that they put out a pro-level product with in depth interviews and highlights, and all the bells and whistles. And honestly - you’ve all seen how spotty the video quality has been all season - who can blame them for switching to a new service? If you listen to the broadcasters for what they put on the air it looks a little like this…
1. Chatham
2. Cotuit
3. Orleans
4. Wareham
5. Bourne
6. Brewster
7. Y-D
8. Hyannis
9. Harwich
10. Falmouth
Anyways - just one man’s opinion. You guys do a great job all season long. I really enjoy reading! And one more (again) time this year…go A’s!
Finals Prediction: Falmouth in 3
At the risk of sounding more than a little pollyanna, I’m going to say we’re all very fortunate to have these broadcasts and these broadcasters, period.
I’m all for ranking them, critiquing them, complimenting them and correcting them. But I’d rather refrain from name-calling.
My brother and I used to sit up in the stands and try to broadcast an entire game for fun. It’s hard work.
I’ve really enjoyed dialing in or connecting over the PC to watch or listen to games I couldn’t make. And while I believe there are both technical and editorial improvements (many of them simple) that could be made, I just want to say we’re fortunate. And I want to thank the broadcasters and the interns for their labor.
We’ll do a season wrap-up and talk about the broadcasts. For now, on to the Championship!
I think Y-D is the best team on the Cape this summer and I think they’ll beat the Commodores in 3 games. Falmouth’s pitching can be tough, though. They’ll have to outpitch the Red Sox if they’re going to win. Both fields are tiny, so there may be a lot of homeruns hit in the finals. I’ve also noticed that YD has added a lot more fans recently. Their home games are much fuller than they used to be and they always bring a lot of loud fans to Eldridge Park when they play us. They sounded loud in Chatham last night.
I don’t understand why there’s a debate about the broadcasters right now with playoff baseball going on!!! But I agree with Cape Phan. Chatham has had the best broadcasts in the league for the last 2-3 years.
And what’s this you’re talking about—-a video feed that works? where is the link?
YD in 3. The East keeps on cleaning up!
Well said…lets play ball
Guys…I didn’t really see any name-calling…just opinions of the broadcast.
CapePhan…Noone said that Chatham doesn’t deliver a sound broadcast from a technical standpoint. They do a fine job. The problem that we have is with the broadcasters themselves.
Your rankings are close to mine but I have Wareham #1 and Chatham #4. Bourne didn’t do video all year so I don’t think you can rank them that high.
Who cares if video wasn’t done all year?
That should have nothing to do with the rankings CapeMan?
The video was so crappy to begin with,it is not worth it at all.
Those rankings are legitimate
Those rankings are quite nice.
The video isn’t too solid to begin with, there is no question in my mind as a fan from CA that it was the worst thing I have ever watched.
The players looked like ants on the screen, with visibility so low you would think your back in time watching TV on a black and white screen.
With all due respect Cape Man.
I think you provide positive feedback on Codball.com throughout the season. However, we only provided video several times throughout the season because that is what our athletic association told us to do.
We had so many complaints from fans about the video that we figured, “why spend 50 bucks a game” when we can broadcast the game with our own flair and style.
Isn’t the point of broadcasting the game to create a visual image that fans can relate too and enjoy.
I know the Bourne fans and family members loved our broadcasts and were extremely positive.
Cape Man, I urge you to go to baseball.cape.com and see what the Bourne broadcasts were all about.
Andrew (Voice of the Braves)
Best Summer of my life.
Thanks Codball for the great write ups.
We are all entitled to our own opinions…correct? Rankings are subjective and kind of fun to see who likes which broadcasts best. In MY opinion, I enjoy the broadcasts much better when there is video and audio. Even on those broadcasts where the video wasn’t so great, the audio was fine.
Andrew…I’ve listened to the Braves broadcast and you guys do great. I was not being critical of your broadcasts; just simply stating that when I put my subjective “rankings” together, I considered the entire package. As I look around the league and consider Cotuit, Wareham and Chatham; (I’m sure that I’m missing someone), they each have really good broadcasters and pretty good video. Bourne has really good broadcasters but no video. See my point?
