Green, Y-D Combine for 8 Runs in Game 1

Posted by Andrew | Filed Under Games |

Y-D HuddleThe clouds opened up mid-day for the 3pm matchup at Red Wilson Field in South Yarmouth where the Y-D Red Sox (#1) beat the Falmouth Commodores (#8) 8-2.

The Y-D bats picked up right where they left off last night in Chatham with a solo shot by Grant Green (USC) and a Gordon Beckham (Georgia) RBI in the 1st. Green and Joey Railey (San Francisco) combined for 2 more RBIs in the 2nd. Green added another run in the 4th with his 2nd round-tripper.

Falmouth would not answer until the 4th inning when David Adams (Virginia) hit a near home run to left. The ball appeared to bounce off the top of the fence, but the hit was ruled a double. Adams would go on to get the run anyway by scoring on a passed ball. Falmouth would score just one more run in the 6th when Adams scored again off back-to-back passed balls.

Y-D pitching continued to be strong with 2006 (and now 2007) playoff star Terry Doyle (Boston College) getting the nod and going a strong 7 1/3rd innings with a few Ks in the mix.

The Red Sox added 3 insurance runs in the 8th by combining for five singles (Romero, Cowgill, Railey, Long, Posey). Controversy struck after Buster Posey’s (Florida St.) single and led to a minute-long umpire huddle. Y-D fans were asking for an interference call that prevented Matt Long (Santa Clara) from scoring. In the end, the runs did not matter, so I am glad that the discussion didn’t last more than a couple minutes.

Some other game notes:

  • It was a scary scene on the 3rd base side when a woman was hit by a foul ball early in the contest. She was taken off on a stretcher in the 4th, but her smiles told me that she will be ok.
  • There were a couple of kids getting the 3rd based crowed pumped up with some homemade signs–one saying “Go Y-D.” Seeing that reminded me of the Chatham mascot attempts in Summer Catch.
  • The 50/50 prize was $1900 (a lot more than last night in Falmouth!) and the winner donated the money back to the team.
  • With two this afternoon, Y-D now has 6 playoff homers. Falmouth has none.
  • It’s do-or-die for Falmouth tomorrow night as they host game 2 of the series at 7pm.
  • My playoffs Flickr photoset continues to grow.

Does anyone have the line-ups for the teams? I’m curious to see if there were any changes in the Y-D, Falmouth lineups.

  3. Andrew on August 13th, 2007 9:46 pm

I didn’t write down all the positions for Y-D, but I think this is right:

YRD: Green (1B), Posey (C), Castro (DH), Beckham (SS), Luna (LF), Romero (3B), Cowgill (CF), Railey (2B), Long (RF)

FAL: Hopkins (CF), Wong (SS), Adams (2B), Barto (RF), Carey (3B), Farrell (1B), Dubler (DH), Gibboi (C), Wallace (LF)

Note that Conor Gillaspie is missing from the lineup (not sure why?). Joey Wong made a great diving play in the 6th to get Grant Green. Y-D pitcher DJ Mauldin made a great snag in the 8th at a ball that was hit right at him by Jeremy Farrell. Y-D RF Matt Long also made a great catch in the 6th at (what would be) the warning track. Also a great catch by John Wallace in the 4th on a hard hit ball by Buster Posey.

  4. Greg on August 13th, 2007 10:01 pm

Matt Gelb had a great story about Conor flying home in today’s Cape Cod Times.

Interesting that Carey moved up in the line-up. Andrew, you will remember me remarking on him last night in Falmouth. He’s come up big a few times during the playoffs.

I’m lookin back at a Y-D score sheet I did on June 16th. Posey has held onto the #2 spot. Others have bounced around

Well, Y-D has a chance to repeat this 2004 matchup against Falmouth. I hope it goes to game 3.

Wow, that is a great story about Conor. Everyone, make sure to read it. Click here to read it online.

    Braves Just What Doctor Ordered
    Aug 13, 2007
    Author: Andrew Grover

My last article as “Braves Head Intern”

As I sit at my host family’s table on Monday August 13th, I have to pinch myself.

Is the 2007 season really over?

I just got here two and a half months ago, wide eyed and ready to be the “head intern” and “voice of the Bourne Braves.”

I’m leaving the Cape Cod in several days. There is no question that serious emotions will run through my spine when I have to leave my new family and friends. Don’t get me wrong, I may return to broadcast for Bourne next year if I don’t get a job in the Minor Leagues, but for now, this could be it for me on the precious Bourne Canal waters.

What could be better than the Cape Cod? This place is a paradise which I won’t ever forget.

The 2007 Bourne Braves were magical. Losing four players to team USA before the season even started, and one to the fourth round of the 2007 MLB draft, who would’ve thought the Braves would wind up as Western Division Champions and one victory away from eclipsing their regular season record for wins at twenty six.

Bourne finished in the top four in pitching and hitting this year in the Cape Cod Baseball League and had five all-stars.

Because Bourne lost players to Team USA before the season, it allocated several spots for temporary players. Boy did they shine. T.J. Hose (East Carolina), Ben Guez (William and Mary) and Bill Perry (Hartford) were exceptional this season for the Braves.

In July, the Bourne pitching staff had the best ERA in the entire league. Although the bats cooled off from a hot and steamy June, the defense and pitching was apparent, and clutch hitting continued to prevail. Bourne torched the Western Division losing only one game to Hyannis and none to the rival Cotuit Kettleers.

Bourne finished with the best regular season home win mark of (16-6) and was (21-0) when leading after seven innings. When Bourne out hit their opponent and scored first, they were also (17-6) as well.

How about Bourne Brave interns. They worked tirelessly for two months at Doran Park and showed up to most road games. They were an incredible team and will be missed severely.

Bourne lost yesterday (5-3) against the Falmouth Commodores. Ending the 2007 season and sending the Bourne Athletic Association back into the rebuilding mode.

Bourne trailed (5-1) in the fifth inning. They inched closer in the seventh trailing (5-3) with the bases loaded. Who else would a Brave fan rather have at the plate than Ben Guez (William and Mary).

Guez swung at a first pitch fastball and nearly cleared the right field wall at Arnie Allen Diamond for the Braves first grand slam of the year. It would’ve been a fitting end to an incredible season.

Thats life though, and the Braves gave it their all. Even with a sixteen man roster in the playoffs. Losing guys like Matthew Hall (Auburn), T.J. Steele (Arizona), Jordan Flasher (George Mason), Mitch Moreland (Mississippi St) and Wade Kapteyn (Evansville) hurt Bourne, but the guys who remained finished the season strong and won the Braves a third division title in five years.

Fielding a team is a 365 day a year job and although the Braves are a non for profit organization, this is a year round business.

I wish the BAA all the best in the off season and this years Bourne Braves all the best of luck.

In two years to this date every single player on the Bourne Brave roster will be in the minor leagues and in four years, at least two will be in the majors. The CCBL prepares these players to succeed in the big league. It provides the kind of talent and baseball that a kid could only dream of. How can you beat the road trips, Bourne to Chatham is only thirty five minutes!

I’m going to miss going to the road games and seeing the Gallaghers, Carriers and having Jenna Beth tell me to shut up. I’m going to miss losing my voice cheering on the Braves on the road and supporting them for doing so well on the field. I’m going to miss walking around different crowds and representing Bourne to the fullest and seeing the city of Bourne cheer on the Braves at Doran Park.

The 2007 season was one I’ll never forget. To the family members, fans and friends of the Braves, thank you so much for supporting a team that has been ranked among the best Summer teams in the nation, the entire year.

For the last time in 2007,

    Have a great night everybody.

    I’ll never forget this.

  7. Andrew on August 13th, 2007 11:49 pm

Great write-up, Andrew. I listened to you several times throughout the season, and I wish you all the best as you begin your career.

Technically speaking, Bourne is a town, not a city, but we knew what you meant :) With the recent population trend, it may be a city soon!

Please check-in with us in the future and let us know where you end up. And enjoy the rest of the summer!

A side note sort of, but did anyone else notice that Bourne dropped off the PGCrosschecker summer rankings? Those rankings don’t mean much, I know, but it’s strange how a team can finish with the 2nd best record in the Cape League and then fall off the rankings just because of losing in the playoffs…

  8. Greg on August 14th, 2007 12:11 am

Andrew (voice of the Braves) thanks for all you’ve done for Cape Cod Baseball. Thanks for your voicemail. Please email me if you would. I’d like to stay in touch.

    Andrew,
Nice report. But the injury and fan activity that you mention was on the third base side, not the first. Anyway, I hope to have some pictures from the game up for viewing later today. http://www.CapeHomepage.com. Enjoy!

  10. Andrew on August 14th, 2007 8:24 am

Thanks Joe, you are right. I’m guessing you are the guy I keep seeing with the LegalInformation.com T-shirt?

  11. CapeMan on August 14th, 2007 8:41 am

Did anyone see that Falmouth did not have any regular position players on the bench? I think the league does need to consider doing something to finish even just a couple of days earlier. Perhaps start one day sooner, schedule a double-header, eliminate an off-day….perhaps a combination. Not exactly sure what the solution is but I’m sure there are kids that have left that wish they were playing. I just wish Falmouth had a full team to put up against a really good Red Sox team.

  12. Joe Cavanaugh on August 14th, 2007 8:48 am

    Hi Andrew,
I am indeed the one with the LegalInformation.com T-Shirt. I’ve actually looked for someone in a CodBall.com T-Shirt at many games, but I have not seen you yet. Although we must have been standing just feet apart at the playoff game in Bourne on Saturday, because I have pictures of the pre-game ceremony that are almost exact copies of yours. Please say hello next time you spot me. I should be at the game tonight in Falmouth.
    Joe

  13. Andrew on August 14th, 2007 8:57 am

Joe, I was at Y-D on Saturday, but I am pretty sure we have a lot of similar photos as I have seen you shooting near me. I was at the Falmouth-Bourne game on Sunday.

I don’t wear my CodBall shirt to every game, but maybe I will tonight! My favorite place to be at Arnie Allen is behind the visitor’s dugout because I am one of the few people who can stand there comfortably (I am 6′6″). I may be sitting with some friends tonight though. But, if I do, I will make sure to walk around.

  14. Paul on August 14th, 2007 11:33 am

    Andrew,
Great blog. Love the Cape League. I think I was standing near you in the line to get autographs at the All-Star game. You’re from Seattle?
    You still have shirts left.
    Enjoy the game tonight!

  15. Andrew on August 14th, 2007 11:53 am

    Hi Paul,

Greg is from Seattle and that’s who you were probably standing near in line.

I’m from Barnstable and live in Newton.

  16. Colonel Sanders on August 14th, 2007 12:47 pm

Terry Doyle pretty much put himself in the Cape League Hall of Fame yesterday. 10 total wins, a no-hitter, 2 wins in the finals, etc. He’s well deserving.

  17. CapeMan on August 14th, 2007 2:46 pm

Great point Colenel….Is Buster Posey in that class?

  18. CapePhan on August 14th, 2007 4:35 pm

No…Posey’s been great…but this is the Hall of Fame, I don’t know if Posey qualifies…he’s good…but is he as good as Thurman Munson was - that’s the standard for HOF catchers in the Cape League
