The Cape League on Facebook
Posted by Andrew | Filed Under News |
One of the largest free social networking sites, Facebook, has quite a few groups dedicated to the Cape League. The groups serve little purpose (other than to showcase ones interests and occasionally chat with other members), but it’s still interesting. The largest group currently has 324 members. Here are some of the other ones on there:
- Cape Cod Baseball League Fans (162 members)
- Cape Cod + Baseball (145 members)
- Hyannis Mets (90 members)
- Cotuit Kettleers Baseball (88 members)
- Ride the Wave! Brewster Whitecaps Baseball (88 members)
- The Bourne Braves (66 members)
- I Love the Chatham a’s (52 members)
- Commodores 06 (39 members)
- Cape Leaguers! (37 members)
- Harwich Mariners (37 members)
- Cape Cod Baseball is the S—!!! (32 members)
- 2007 Falmouth Commodores (19 members)
- Brewster whitecaps baseball kicks a– (11 members)
- Cape Cod Baseball League (6 members)
- Bourne Braves Interns 2007 (4 members)
- Bourne Braves (3 members)
- The Orleans Cardinals are the best Cape Cod baseball team ever (3 members)
So, judging from Facebook (admittedly a poor measure), Hyannis has the most fans. Wareham and Y-D are the only teams without at least one dedicated team group.

I just want to say that YD has at least two facebook groups of which I’m a member… YD Red Sox ‘06 Cape League Champions and 2007 Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, A Dynasty is Born
These groups are specific to the people associated directly with the team, but they are groups for the team none the less
Thanks for the info, Terry!
You’re right. I only listed the public groups.
Is the Facebook Y-D group the key to your success?… Did you guys use it to chat during the off-season and introduce yourselves before the summer starts? (Seems like such a trivial thing, but we all know the importance of team-building, and this is something that could not easily be done before the Internet)
No, the groups were both made after the last two years. It’s summer vacation and the teams spend at least 5 hours a day together all summer so that’s when the relationships build. Most of the guys that I’ve played with the past two years i met the first day of practice in YD.
Ah, well that makes sense based on the group names. It would be an interesting experiment to create groups ahead of time.
Thanks for joining us on CodBall, Terry. Hope you had a good fall, and enjoy the off-season!
I know that some of you were following the situation with John Wylde on the Gatemen website. I just took a look and the news is not good. Check out the home page of the site…it is right there…or here. http://www.gatemen.org
Very interesting, Andrew. I’m surprised we haven’t written about this earlier.
Timely reporting since Microsoft today purchased Facebook.

Interesting! It’s a 1.6% stake in Facebook though, not a complete acquisition. That’s amazing that it costs that much just to get a piece of the social network. Zuckerberg has very big plans for Facebook and he probably won’t part with it for any price.
Capeman, thanks for your update on John Wylde. There is a book about the Red Sox and their phenomenal success in 2004 called Faithful. Faithful is a good word for the situation in Wareham.
I have sent flowers to the Wylde family at Beth Israel from their faithful friends at CodBall.
Very nice gesture Greg…..
I’d like to say that I’m very impressed with the chat concerning Mr. Wylde in Wareham. It is wonderful to see such concern and such well wishes for a difficult situation. The display of support from the Cape Cod Baseball League community, and CodBall.com in particular, is tremendous. I’m sure it’s also well deserved by Mr. Wilde. I wish to add my thoughts and prayers to the chorus in support of him. I’ve never met the man, but I, like most people, have had cancer affect my family. Best wishes to Mr. Wilde and his family.
