It’s Spring Training Somewhere in the World

matt-laporta-mesa-solar-sox.jpgmatt-antonelli-peoria-saguaros.jpgWe may be setting our clocks to “fall back,” but in the baseball world there is always a little spring ahead.

Finishing schools for prospects like the Arizona Fall League and the Hawaii Winter League are great places to see the stars of the future — even while the frost thickens on the Cape. And in Latin America, the Dominican Winter Baseball League, as well as leagues in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela keep big names and prospects fit and ready for spring training in the American MLB.

Wherever there is quality, competitive baseball being played, chances are that former Cape Cod Baseball League players are there, too.

For example, Baseball America reported that former Chatham A’s and 2005 CCBL MVP Evan Longoria is playing in the Arizona Fall League this season. Drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Longoria was to play in the AFL for the Scottsdale Scorpions. Matt Antonelli, from Wake Forest and the Falmouth Commodores, is playing for the AFL’s Peoria Saguaros. Matt LaPorta (Y-D) is doing a great job this season in the AFL.

Our friend Brett Sinkbeil (Falmouth / Florida Marlins) is on the Honu roster. Brad Suttle (Wareham / Yankees) is on the Sharks roster in Hawaii.

I’m going to Hawaii in a few weeks but sadly will miss the Hawaii championship series by one day. Sure would like to see Sinkbeil pitch.

Matt Wieters (Orleans) is on that same roster as is Daniel Bard (Wareham) who is in the Red Sox farm system. It is funny to see Red Sox and Yankees on the same team. (Suttle and Bard) They missed each other by a year I believe in Wareham…I wonder if they would ever talk about the CCBL, the Gatemen, etc.??

I found three other former Gatemen on the Arizona Fall League rosters….Mike Nickeas (Georgia Tech) for Scottsdale and Andy LaRoche; the super prospect for the Dodgers listed on the Mesa roster. Also, Michael Holliman, the SS that played for Texas and then Oral Roberts.

I also noticed James Simmons from UC-Riverside and Cotuit who is on the Pheonix roster.

    I’m sure there are more.

The Hyannis Mets roster was released…I just noticed as of 11/8. Very interesting now that their is a new coach… Three players from Michigan; a trendy “up and coming” team; especially after defeating Vandy in the playoffs last year. Also, Matt Nuzzo (Brown) who I believe used to play in Falmouth is now a member of the Hyannis Mets.

They are also heaving w/Clemson, Virginia and Vanderbilt players.

Thanks CapeMan. Interesting that there are two players from Brown on the roster. It isn’t often that two players from one Ivy League school end up on the same Cape League team. Also, there is a bit of a local flavor with Matt Nuzzo from Everett HS and Jeff DeCarlo from St. John’s Prep on the team. Nuzzo was a fantastic football player for the powerhouse Crimson Tide football team.
