Cotuit Kettleers Post Roster

Posted by Dave | Filed Under News |

cotuit-hat.JPG The Cotuit Kettleers have posted their roster: http://www.kettleers.org/2007roster.htm. One of the interesting things to follow in the ‘08 season will be the progression of Robert Stock (USC) as he returns to the Kettleers for a second season.

The Kettleers join Bourne, Hyannis, Wareham and Y-D as the teams who have posted their preliminary rosters. As is usually the case, the teams in the Western Division have taken the lead in providing their fans with an early look at their rosters.

While the Cardinals may not provide much by way of off-season news, there is an article in today’s Cape Cod Times covering the team’s application for a Yawkee Foundation Grant to make field improvements.

I saw that article too. I couldn’t help but wonder why anyone on a town board would question something like a screen that could be put up and taken down. Seems to me that the intent to provide safety to the folks attending the games should be a priority. Yes, anyone attending a baseball game should be paying attention at all times to ensure they do not get hit with a ball. In reality though, even with adult supervision, some six year old could turn his back or look away from the field at just the wrong time. No child is going to focus on what is happening on the field for every pitch in a game. It doesn’t have to be a child. Adults get hit too. I’m uncomfortable even mentioning this in response to the news article, but no one wants to have another tragic event, such as what happened to Mike Coolbaugh, occur at any baseball field.
When I go to a game in Orleans, I usually stand somewhere between home plate and either dugout. I don’t necesarily like to watch a game through a screen, so I will probably just move further down the line. Having said that, I think a screen at that field is a good idea and the Cardinals organization deserves credit for taking a step to ensure safety at the games.
It was interesting to learn that Orleans is one of three teams to apply for the Yawkey grant money. I was wondering if this would be the year Orleans and Chatham apply for, and receive, that money. I know it is not set up on a rotating basis but they are the only two teams to not receive money from the Yawkey grant.

On the Cotuit roster, looks like plenty of Pac-10 guys so I will get to see them during the NCAA season leading up to the Cape season.

It will be interesting to see how Stock has matured as a player. Recall that he left high school a year early.

I can’t argue with the Cardinals decision to make safety a priority either. While it is very nice to be able to get so close to the players during Cape Cod Baseball League games, these guys are not exactly Little Leaguers. Whetehr it’s throwing or hitting, they certainly get the ball moving with Big League velocity. Last season, I witnessed one incident in Yarmouth where EMTs were called upon to treat an elderly fan who got whacked in the head by a vicious foul ball ripped down the third-base line. I too almost got smacked by foul balls twice during the season while taking photographs. I actually cringe to think of a youngster being seriously injured at a Cape League game. So although I too would prefer open views, as opposed to peering through safety screens, I think that the safety of fans trumps unobstructed views. Thus, I support the screens.

As you may know, all the franchises are run by volunteers which means that updating websites for some is more difficult than others.

Most of the key volunteers put in hundreds of hours of time throughout the season and give up significant portions of their free time during the summer to bring baseball to the Cape.
