ESPN is reporting that former Y-D Red Sox player Phil Humber (2003) is part of the deal that will send several prospects from the New York Mets to Minnesota in a trade for two-time Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana. CodBall has reported previously on Humber.

Watching Old Baseball Games

Over the past few weeks I’ve watched the New York Yankees win two historic baseball games.  With the help of iTunes and a speedy Internet connection, I was able to download the 1978 AL East tie-breaker (New York at Boston) and Game 7 of the 1952 World Series (New York at Brooklyn). As my airplane soared over California, I managed to take in both games during the course of several trips – watching from my iPod and my PC. I am not a Yankees fan but their game archive seems to be the most easily accessed.  I have not yet found a single location where a fan can access complete game broadcasts of baseball’s great games.  It seems very scatter-shot to find a gem here and there.  Go to iTunes and type in baseball games to see what you can find. I do...

Orleans Cardinals Announce 2008 Roster

The Orleans Cardinals this week became the 6th team to announce its 2008 roster.  Bourne, Brewster, Cotuit, Wareham and Yarmouth-Dennis also have announce their 2008 player rosters. A roster this early in the year provides an early glimpse at recruiting efforts, but a roster at this point also provides a snapshot of talent we can follow during the NCAA season. Catcher Travis Tartamella returns from Pepperdine.  So does LHP Rob Catapano from North Carolina.  Catcher Hampton Tignor from Florida also returns.   There may be others who are returning.  We will continue to look for updates. Orleans had some great players last season in Dennis Raben, Nate Freiman and Chase...

Brewster Whitecaps 2008

The Brewster Whitecaps have posted their roster. As Jim Nowak, the Whitecaps announcer, might say….. “Here are YOURRRRR 2008 Brewster Whitecaps!”: http://www.brewsterwhitecaps.com/roster.htm I don’t believe there are any players returning from last year’s team. I do not remember Brewster having many Univ. of North Carolina players in previous seasons, but the ’08 roster shows two Tar Heels – INF Garrett Gore and RHP B.J. Dail. Also, Wade Broyles (RHP, Mississippi), a player who was mentioned in an earlier CodBall posting when we were guessing where some former Coastal Plains League players would end up, is on the Whitecaps...

Baseball and Comic Books

CodBall has reviewed a lot of baseball books because Andrew and I love to read about the sport. My little home library probably has 40-50 baseball books in it, and when I go to a library or a bookstore (which is often) I go first to the baseball section to see if there is anything I haven’t seen. I know a lot about baseball books, but I finally stumbled upon one (in fact an entire genre) I hadn’t seen before. It’s a book full of pictures and narrative. In fact, it’s a comic book about one of the most important characters in baseball — Satchel Paige. It is a wonderful book — which happens to be a comic book — about Satchel Paige, and I found it just days after reading an interesting editorial in The New York Times. The...
