cardinals-logo.jpgThe Orleans Cardinals this week became the 6th team to announce its 2008 roster.  Bourne, Brewster, Cotuit, Wareham and Yarmouth-Dennis also have announce their 2008 player rosters.

A roster this early in the year provides an early glimpse at recruiting efforts, but a roster at this point also provides a snapshot of talent we can follow during the NCAA season.

Catcher Travis Tartamella returns from Pepperdine.  So does LHP Rob Catapano from North Carolina.  Catcher Hampton Tignor from Florida also returns.   There may be others who are returning.  We will continue to look for updates.

Orleans had some great players last season in Dennis Raben, Nate Freiman and Chase D’Arnaud.

Nate Frieman is returning as well it seems. As is Kyle Kamppi

Returning both catchers is huge for Orleans, on the heels of another great pitching staff. Tignor and Tartamella know how manager Kelly Nicholson and pitching coach Chris Beck work, which should make the learning curve quicker for new pitchers.

Catapano was phenomenal last season. I believe he only gave up one or two runs the entire season coming out of the bullpen.

Kamppi was a temp player who ended up staying on the roster throughout the season. Though he didn’t get consistent innings, he was solid throughout.

From a leadership standpoint, returning Nate Freiman is huge. Freiman is a hard worker who plays great defense. His bat really came alive in the second half of the season.

I have also heard great things about Erickson from Miami.

Massachusetts is not known as a hotbed of high school baseball but in addition to Wellesley’s Nate Freiman, the Cardinals also have Alex Hassan from Milton on this year’s roster. Freiman and Hassan both attend Duke. Hassan is an incredibly talented player who went to Boston College HS where he earned Louisville Slugger Player of the Year honors for Massachusetts. He was also a member of the Milton Legion team that won the state championship in 2006.
