Letter to Commissioner Bud Selig
Dear Commissioner: It was reported today in the Cape Cod Times that Major League Baseball continues to negotiate with the Cape Cod Baseball League for a license and revenue deal for the merchandise of six Cape league teams bearing the names of Major league teams — the Mariners, A’s, Cardinals, Braves, Red Sox and Mets. With all due respect, Commissioner Selig, you’ve made a mistake with respect to Cape Cod Baseball. You can still avoid the sin of making this amateur baseball league that produces your stars of the future pay anything more than $6 per year to Major League Baseball. I am not a lawyer (I’m just an opinionated fan), but I do understand MLB’s need to license its names and logos. In intellectual property...

According to the revised schedule, Wareham will be playing two “home” games in New Bedford this year. As noted previously, Wareham will host Bourne at Walsh Field on Friday, July 11. Orleans will travel to New Bedford to play the Gatemen on Monday, June 16. The Cardinals may be making the longest “road trip” in the history of regular season CCBL games. Not sure how many nautical miles teams traveled when they played on Nantucket a few years ago!
Read MoreDodgertown might be a future chapter in “Haunted Baseball”
In a matter of days, Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida, will become something of a ghost town. Next spring, the LA Dodgers will move their preseason to Glendale, AZ, ending decades of Brooklyn and LA Dodger history in Florida. The move will leave memories, history and some might say specters — phantoms, ghosts. Talk about an old haunt. Writers Mickey Bradley and Dan Gordon have chronicled baseball ghost stories in their carefully researched and engagingly written book, Haunted Baseball: Ghosts, Curses, Legends and Eerie Events. Their collection of baseball ghosts stories opens on Crescent Lake’s Huggins-Stengel Field, a care-worn old baseball field named for two Yankee coaches — Miller Huggins and Casey Stengel. The authors draw a...
Read MoreThe ’08 Chatham A’s
The Chatham A’s announced their pre-season roster last night: http://www.chathamas.com/index.cfm?base=5. All of the rosters will change between now and the start of the season but Chatham’s roster will change dramatically. They list 28 players – 16 pitchers and only 12 positional players. They have the potential to have a very deep and talented pitching staff. There are nine members of the ’07 A’s returning this summer. Brad Boxberger, who played for rival Orleans last year, is moving a few miles down Rte. 28 from Eldredge Park to Veterans Field this year. Boxberger was picked to the East all-star team last year but did not play due to an injury. He was also one of Baseball America’s Top 30 prospects for the...
Read MoreWant to be a Cape League batboy or batgirl?
WickedLocal.com has a nice announcement about recruiting kids to become batboys or batgirls in the Cape Cod Baseball League. I don’t see this information on Cape League websites so let me know if it’s inaccurate. The website reports that reliable boys and girls are wanted — 10 years old and up (some exceptions). Two or three evenings/nights per week; some travel. Must be attentive and be able to focus. Reward: You may be spending a lot of time with a future Baseball Hall of Famer. See list below for person to contact in your area. It’s not too early, or too late, to check in with your neighborhood Cape Cod Baseball League team if you have a child or know of one with these aspirations and qualifications to be a batboy or batgirl. Anyone...
