Harwich Mariners Post Roster

Posted by Dave | Filed Under News |

The Harwich Mariners posted their pre-season roster a couple days ago: http://www.harwichmariners.org/ Santa Clara, Auburn, Baylor and Florida State are represented with two players from each of those schools. Harwich has three UNC Tar Heels on their roster, including highly touted Dustin Ackley. Ackley was on Chatham’s roster before the 2007 season opened, but he never played for the A’s.

As we know, all of the rosters will look much different on Opening Day, and again by the first week in July, than they do today. With the Mariners posting their roster, the Chatham A’s are the only team yet to announce their ‘08 roster.

Did anyone else see this article in the Cape Cod Times about MLB wanting a piece of the merchandise from the 6 teams having “MLB” nicknames…Braves, Mariners, etc.? Interesting stuff…

I’ve often wondered about that. There’s an old legal addage that you protect Intellectual Property or you lose it. There are Cardinals and Mariner’s teams everywhere, but the issue must ben when they also use the team logo, colors etc

    Very interesting.
Major League Baseball provides a $100,000.00 grant to the CCBL every year. Since the MLB minimum salary in 2008 is $390,000, it doesn’t seem inappropriate to say that MLB could do a better job of providing financial backing to Cape League teams - and likely some other summer leagues as well. I’m not saying that only because of my interest and enjoyment of the Cape League. It just seems to me that with the salaries that are tossed around in baseball, MLB might be able to do a little better than providing a quarter of what a backup infielder earns. Having said that, I’m sure the Cape League teams are grateful for what they receive.
A few years ago, there were many articles written about how Little League teams might not be allowed to wear replica jerseys with the MLB team nickname on them, without compensating MLB. There was such a backlash that MLB backed down and did not force the issue.
My first reaction to the story is that the CCBL teams should drop the MLB nicknames. That was before getting to the part where it says that is one option being considered. That may be spiteful on my part and I would have to think about other ramifications. This may not be a bad idea anyway, even if this story wasn’t in the news. It might be kind of nice to have more teams go the route of the Gatemen, Kettleers, Commodores and Whitecaps. I believe Andrew Wirtanen had expressed his support of that idea a few months ago.
I think Wareham, Cotuit and Brewster might be safe. Could there really be another sports team named “Kettleers” anywhere in America ?!! Falmouth better watch out though. The NCAA, being the keeper of purity and integrity in athletics (ha !), may step in on behalf of Vanderbilt and expect payment from the 50/50 raffle from every Falmouth home game if they plan to remain “Commodores.”
Hey, I say CodBall contributors come up with potential nicknames for consideration by the other six teams ! Maybe Bourne could go back to being the Canalmen, although that is the nickname of the Bourne HS athletic teams. Y-D could become the Vikings to honor the Viking history in the Bass River area. The Hyannis Merchants ? Afterall, the Mets, oops I mean Hyannis, is working closely with the downtown merchants to bring people to McKeon Park. We could have Whalers, Riptides, geez, the possibilities are endless.

As of 8:15pm tonight, there are over 40 comments on Boston.com in response to that blog item..almost ALL in favor of the CCBL, with most being disgusted by the greed of MLB.

Saying that, I’d like to see those teams have some unique names too like the Kettleers or Gatemen. Think of the merchandise opportunities.

I just read the comments to the story in the Cape Cod Times sports section. Out of the two pages that I read (there are more), not one person even attempted to justify Major League Baseball’s greed. I’m trying to be fair. Yes, MLB provides $100,000 to the Cape League each year. Is it my place to say that MLB should pay more ? No. But lets be honest, that money is a drop in the bucket to MLB. The threat to withold that money if the Cape teams don’t purchase from MLB licensed vendors is absurd.
In addition to providing money to what is an early proving-ground for possible future MLB players, there is some goodwill earned by MLB too. Even most casual fans who go to a game will read a Cape League roster book and find out that MLB provides this grant. I think most people appreciate and respect MLB for that. A lot of that goodwill can be undone very easily if MLB makes good on their threat.
