The ‘08 Chatham A’s

as-logo.jpg The Chatham A’s announced their pre-season roster last night: http://www.chathamas.com/index.cfm?base=5.

All of the rosters will change between now and the start of the season but Chatham’s roster will change dramatically. They list 28 players - 16 pitchers and only 12 positional players. They have the potential to have a very deep and talented pitching staff.

There are nine members of the ‘07 A’s returning this summer. Brad Boxberger, who played for rival Orleans last year, is moving a few miles down Rte. 28 from Eldredge Park to Veterans Field this year. Boxberger was picked to the East all-star team last year but did not play due to an injury. He was also one of Baseball America’s Top 30 prospects for the league last year.

Chatham’s roster has four players from USC, and three each from UCLA, Baylor, and San Diego. As is usually the case, the Univ. of North Carolina will be well represented in Chatham with four Tar Heels expected to arrive.

The pitching staff could be very good. Returning pitchers invited back to Chatham include Charles Brewer, Gavin Brooks, Kevin Couture, Jeff Lorick, Tom Milone and Alex White. Milone won the Whitehouse Award as the league’s Outstanding Pitcher in ‘07.

A’s management seems to have put this roster together knowing that at least five or six of those sixteen pitchers will never make it to Chatham. Even so, the staff could be very strong. Kyle Blair, Matt Harvey, Justin Marks and Jacob Thompson all have impressive resumes.

Kyle Seager (2B), Gregg Glime (C) and the exciting Addison Johnson (OF) are also back for another year on the Cape.

On March 10th, the A’s look very strong. Keep in mind though, last March I thought that Wareham had a team that would compete for the championship. We all know how that worked out as the Gatemen struggled all year and finished in last place in the West.

After listening to John Wylde’s interview, this roster is just what you would have expected. You could have put Matt Harvey on this team as soon as he signed with UNC.

Dave hit on most of the specifics but a couple of observations…

    - I mentioned a while ago that Louisville will be a school to watch on CCBL rosters and this is at least the 4th team to have players from UL (Chatham, Falmouth, Wareham, Bourne)
    - I think the entire UNC and Baylor rosters are playing on the Cape this summer!!!
    - If Team USA stays away from the younger players, the CCBL may once again be ripe with pitching talent..and thus lower batting averages.
    - I wonder how so many USC and UCLA players will get along on the same team?
    - Not sure if the A’s pay for their players’ airfare, but with 12 kids from California, that is going to be some bill!!
    - Aaron Miller from Baylor is off to one of the best season’s in the Big12 and the best Baylor kids usually end up in Wareham so this is a coup for Chatham.
    - Chatham and Wareham will also compete to see who is the best Louisville pitcher to come to the Cape. Justin Marks and Dean Keikhefer are two of their best pitchers.
    - I had to look twice when I saw Jacob Thompson on the roster…thinking of the Jacob Thompson from Virginia; one of the best pitchers in the nation.

Yeah, I will be reporting soon after I check out some UNC games.

California to Boston actually isn’t that costly, if it’s only one roundtrip flight. I’m pretty sure I managed to get a direct flight roundtrip under $400 when I’ve gone out there.

Miller (Baylor) is on a tear this season. Should be one of the elite prospects in the Cape this summer.

Aaron Miller and Dylan Brown (Oklahoma St.) were both on Chatham’s preseason roster last year but neither player came to the Cape. Miller spent last summer recovering from a broken right arm.

If Team USA leaves the Chatham and Wareham rosters alone, I think those two teams have the top pitching staffs. Aaron Fitt from Baseball America just answered a question about the top sophomores in the country on a recent chat. Of the six players mentioned, Kendal Volz, Mike Minor and Andrew Oliver are all on the Wareham roster and Alex White is on the Chatham roster. Kyle Gibson (Falmouth) and Stephen Strausburg (San Diego State and NECBL) rounded out his mentions.

When you mix in the freshman talent (Matt Harvey, Kyle Blair, Justin Marks, Jacob Thompson for Chatham and Brandon Workman, Robby Broach, Zach Brewster, Dean Keikhefer for Wareham), you have a couple of incredible staffs on paper.
