Orleans Fails to Net a Grant
Posted by Greg | Filed Under News |
Matthew Belson over at WickedLocal.com has an interesting article, “Orleans Citizens Cry Foul Over Loss of Yawkey Grant.”
Matthew writes that the Orleans Cardinals and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox are the only teams yet to receive a $150,000 grant from Yawkey, a Boston-based foundation that has helped support Cape Cod baseball for years.
Yawkey requires a local community match – or financial support – in order to qualify for its grant money. It appears that the town of Orleans appropriated dollars for an irrigation system rather than for the protective netting that would help to meet league safety policies.
You’ll have to read Matthew’s piece to sort it all out. Seems like the protective netting should have been the priority in Orleans.

I thought this was a bad decision by the selectmen at the time it was made and I still feel the same way. I remember some of the comments on the Cape Cod Times website when this story was first reported. I assumed that most folks would support the idea of netting in order to provide safety and I was surprised to read a couple of comments that supported the decision of the selectmen. (In fairness, I believe there were only three of four comments to the article.)
I don’t feel that safety netting would greatly take away from the “small town,” or “Americana” feel of Eldredge Park.
I don’t particularly like watching a game through a screen, but I feel that the potential benefit outweighs any less enjoyment I may feel. I completely agree with those who say that parents should control their children and people should pay attention, but in reality, what five year old is going to pay attention to every pitch of a game ? That child could be on a blanket with mom and dad and if he/she turns and looks away at just the wrong instant, there could still be an accident. Anyone, regardless of age, could be struck by a batted ball. I like to be as close to the action as possible and I enjoy an unobstructed view, but I stil feel that protective netting is a good idea. If it detracts a little from my enjoyment of watching, I can move a little further down the line.
