Yawkey Grant Money to Chatham and Harwich

Posted by Dave | Filed Under News |

No surprise, since this had been mentioned earlier, but the Yawkey Foundation has awarded grant money to Chatham and Harwich. See the story in today’s Cape Cod Times : http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080422/SPORTS/804220312

This means that Yarmouth-Dennis and Orleans are the only two Cape League teams who have not received this grant. Chatham will use a portion of their money to extend safety netting at Veterans Field. A few months ago, the town of Orleans voted against putting up safety netting at Eldredge Park and that decision may have cost them a chance to receive one of these grants this year.

What a difference compared to MLB!!! The Yawkey Foundation, with such obvious ties to the Red Sox and MLB, are giving 3x as much money to these towns and organizations as MLB. Yet, MLB is holding the league’s feet to the fire over a few hats and t-shirts. What a contrast.

I understand that the Yawkey Foundation doesn’t have a logo dispute with the CCBL but just the fact that they give $300,000 annually to the league compared to the $100,000 that is given by MLB is really something that should be pointed out. Perhaps the real point to be made concerning the MLB/CCBL relationship is that MLB…with all of their millions of dollars and considering how they benefit from the Cape League is that they ONLY give the CCBL…as greatful as they are…$100,000 per year.

Justin Masterson…former Wareham Gatemen pitcher…started for the Boston Red Sox yesterday. The Gatemen website has a very large section dedicated to it.
