UCLA Looks Like a Cape League All-Star Team

Cape-rich UCLA came to Seattle last weekend to play a three-game series against the Washington Huskies. The UCLA Bruins, ranked number one at the beginning of the college baseball calendar, has struggled so far but is exciting to watch with 14 current and past Cape Cod Baseball League players on its roster this season.
On a sunny Friday evening on the UW campus, it felt very much like a summer warm-up on the Cape. There was Jermaine Curtis (Chatham ‘07) hustling down the first base line after a walk, just like last summer. There was Ryan Babineau (Brewster ‘07) catching top pro prospect Tim Murphy. There was Charles Brewer brewing up another win.
Murphy is picked by Baseball America as the 28th top pro prospect. I watched his performance last Friday against the Huskies. His fast ball topped out at 90 with most in the mid to upper 80s. He mixes his pitches well, and throws a nice curve for strikes. He was not dominating. A lefty, his move to first is good but he did get called for a balk.
Brewer, who is again on the Chatham roster, also topped out at 90 but went 6.1 innings with 5 hits and one run.
The treat for me was Casey Haerther (first base) who will play his first season with the Chatham As. He hit a towering home run in the sixth inning off Cam Nobles of the Huskies who had been in a tight pitching duel with Brewer. Haerther’s two-run homer gave UCLA the lead which they built upon for the remainder of the game.
UCLA’s Cape roster includes the following 2008 Cape players: Garrett Claypool (Brewster), Justin Uribe (Brewster), Charles Brewer (Chatham), Gavin Brooks (Chatham), Casey Haerther (Chatham), Blair Dunlop (Cotuit), Gabe Cohen (Falmouth), Dan Klein (Falmouth), Rob Rasmussen (Orleans), Erik Goeddel (Y-D).
Also on the UCLA team from the 2007 Cape season are: Brandon Crawford (Orleans), Ryan Babineau (Brewster), and Charles Brewer (Chatham).

Today, I was watching a tape-delay telecast of the UCLA – Arizona State game. Casey Haerther hit his eighth homerun of the season in that game. Jermaine Curtis also homered and had two RBI. It is hard to imagine with that talented lineup that the Bruins are struggling to get to .500 in the conference.
Justin Uribe will not be coming to the Cape this summer. He has been removed from the Whitecaps roster.
Where did Tim Murphy play on the Cape in ‘07 ? In one place you mentioned Chatham, and later you mentioned Brewster. He didn’t play for Chatham and I don’t recall him playing for Brewster. I couldn’t find a record of his name on the CCBL stats page for any team. Just curious where he actually did play.
My 2007 roster shows Tim Murphy playing with Brewster last season. Am I wrong?
I have been following Murphy during this college season, but I didn’t have a recollection of him playing on the Cape last summer. He may well have played for Brewster, but when I tried to look him up to see how he performed for the Whitecaps, I didn’t see his name listed in the “Final Edition” Yearbook, nor on the stats page of the league website. Maybe he was with Brewster in ‘07 but left early ??
In yesterday’s game, UCLA defeated Arizona State, 8-3. In addition to the exploits of Haerther and Curtis, Ryan Babineau (Brewster) also had two RBI and Charles Brewer (Chatham) was the winning pitcher, allowing three runs on six hits in 5+ innings of work. In the rubber game of the series today, Gavin Brooks (Chatham) will pitch for UCLA. This is a very important game for UCLA’s postseason hopes as they enter the game with a 7-7 conference record (24-19 overall).
You also left out 2B Alden Carrithers who played in Orleans last summer and I believe was also in the league in 2006.
Murphy never showed for Brewster. I think I remember hearing that he was told to stay home by the UCLA coaches. He was fine tuning his transition from Utility Player to fulltime Starting Pitcher.
Thanks for the info Alex !
