The Cape League Rox (Y-D vs. Falmouth @ Brockton)
Last night, the Y-D Red Sox defeated the Falmouth Commodores 5-4 at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, MA. Campanelli is home to the Brockton Rox of the Can-Am League, an independent minor league equivalent to A-ball. The game was dubbed a “Cape League Championship Series re-match”, but we all know that nearly all of the players on both teams are different. As a side note, Campanelli is hailed as one of the best parks in independent baseball and I’d encourage all Cape League fans to make the trip up Route 24 to see it sometime. Not many MLB players are born in the park (in fact, more big league dreams will fade), but it’s a good place to enjoy a baseball game. Our report today comes from our friend Brian Foley of The College Baseball Blog (see...
Read MoreSurprise Omissions from Team USA Roster
Team USA posted their roster yesterday. I feel there are some very surprising omissions. Their roster includes the following players: COLON, Christian DAVIS, Kentrai DEN DEKKER, Matt DIETRICH, Derek FELLHAUER, Josh GIBBS, Micah GIBSON, Kyle GRIFFIN, A.J. HERNANDEZ, Chris JACKSON, Ryan LEAKE, Mike LIPKIN, Ryan LYONS, Tyler MINOR, Mike MORRIS, Hunter OLIVER, Andy RHODERICK, Kevin SMITH, Blake STRASBURG, Steve VOLZ, Kendal There must be some very happy Cape League General Managers and coaches because of some names that are not on the USA roster. To me, there were some stunning omissions. Ryan Berry (Bourne), Dustin Ackley (Harwich) and Josh Phegley (Wareham) are players who I felt certain would be on Team USA. The Bourne Braves roster could be...
Read MoreAfter 10 days, leaders emerge
After 10 days of play, the Hyannis Mets and Falmouth Commodores are off to hot starts — 5 wins and a little win-streak. But look at the lowly Harwich Mariners. Isn’t it ironic that two of the top teams are MLB-named (see previous post)? It’s still early but it looks like Chatham and Wareham are underperforming. Chatham is still awaiting several players from North Carolina, who continue to storm the College World Series in Omaha. Harwich is getting it done by leading the league in team pitching (4-2 with a 1.84 ERA). The Mariners are not dominating in hitting but come in a respectable 4th with .245 team batting average. Orleans is not far off in team pitching but seem unable to hit the ball, hitting a collective .181. Five guys are...
Read MoreA hold out in the MLB Deal?
The Cape Cod Times reported today that five of six CCBL teams had reached agreement with the MLB in their dispute regarding license of big league team names for merchandise. The Bourne Braves, the Chatham A’s, the Harwich Mariners, the Hyannis Mets, the Orleans Cardinals and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox — all members of the Cape Cod League — share names of Major League teams. Commissioner Paul Galop told us recently that a deal was imminent (see post below). See our letter to Commissioner Bud Selig on this matter. The CC Times (Nate Sandals) reports that there is one hold out in the Cape League who has not reached an agreement. This is either a principled stance by one team, or a mere...
Read MoreRoster Movements
As always, at this time of the season there are too many roster movements to even attempt to report them. I will pass along a few transactions though, just because of the significance of them. Casey Haerther (UCLA) will not be coming to Chatham this summer. He will likely be having knee surgery soon. Haerther’s absence may leave a large void in the middle of the A’s lineup. Another UCLA Bruin, pitcher Gavin Brooks was scheduled to return to Chatham for his second season on the Cape, but he was dropped from the A’s roster a couple weeks ago. Also, Jeremy Synan (N.C. State) has signed with the Florida Marlins. Synan batted .388 in 18 games for the A’s in 2007. Mike Bianucci is a recent addition to the Cotuit...
