Bourne Bumps Games to 7pm

Posted by Andrew | Filed Under News | 9 Comments

It’s official: Bourne has moved the majority of its games this season to 7pm. Please see the official CCBL 2008 schedule for more details. The news comes as no surprise, since the original shocker back in February. If you don’t believe it, check out the pictures of the lights installation (or drive to Upper Cape Tech). This move leaves the only 5pm games in Cotuit, Y-D, and Brewster.

I wonder if all of the schedules were printed with the wrong times since we have only about a week left till Opening Day (or John Wylde Day)?

It is funny that you made this post Andrew…I just noticed about 30 seconds ago on the Wareham site that they posted small announcement on their site about the scheduling change. Bourne also has an announcement at the top of their site.

With lights, Bourne’s field jumps to the top of the best field in the Cape League, IMHO. Has anyone seen that playing surface they have? I can’t wait to make the trip and see a game under the lights.

For fun, here’s how I rank the fields (as of this minute, prior to the lights going on in Bourne)

    1.) Chatham (beautiful)
    2.) Orleans (see above)
3.) Cotuit (epitome of the Cape)
4.) Bourne (best in league when lights go on)
5.) Harwich (Mainly due to the Scoreboard)
    6.) Y/D (Food rules there)
7.) Hyannis (New lights will help)
8.) Brewster (New field is ok, but not great)
9.) Wareham (Gravel infield is bush league)
    10) Falmouth (Absolute dump)

    Easybigfella:
I did the same thing a couple years ago on my website:
    http://www.andrewwirtanen.com/2006/08/10/cape-league-fields/
(this was done before Hyannis and Bourne had lights, obviously).

Easybigfella… I disagree with you about Falmouth. It is not the best ballpark but certainly not a dump. The playing surfaced has improved greatly and if you stand on the third base side near home plate, there isn’t a better place to watch the game close up.

I also wouldn’t categorize the gray infield in Wareham as “bush league”…that is harsh. If you listen to one of John Wylde’s interview on Codball, you will hear some of the reasons as to why they leave the stonedust.

Hyannis is my least favorite although lights there will be a huge improvement. Other than that, I agree with your overall list.

I have to agree that Falmouth does not deserve that designation.

I have to say, I’m getting pretty excited about the opening on Friday.

I think we will have a new CodBall Conversation this week with Commissioner Paul Galop. Stay tuned.

I’m pumped up too. I actually watched a little of the Gatemen/Columbus broadcast last night. Lots and Lots of temporarily players in Wareham right now. Have you noticed the non-roster section of their roster. Kids from Massasoit CC, Stonehill College, Georgetown, Harvard, etc. I was surprised since so many of their regular players were knocked out of the first round of the NCAA tournament.

I also heard John Wylde’s voice in the background of the broadcast…that was good to hear!!

I think calling Guv Fuller Field a “dump” is a bit harsh. Having said that, it is not one of my favorite places to go to a game either. Fuller Field can never hope to be as aesthetically pleasing as Lowell Park or any number of other venues. That is mostly due to the surrounding area, rather than the ballpark itself. To be fair, I have not attended a game in Falmouth since the 2004 playoffs. If I am on the lower Cape, I will attend games in that area without having to drive to Falmouth. If I am going to a game from where I live, it is easier to go to a game in Wareham or Bourne. When I do go to a game in Falmouth, I am familiar enough with the area to know where to park. When Falmouth hosts an All Star game or playoff game, parking can be a problem and from what I understand, the Falmouth police have earned their reputation of being quick to ticket and tow.
I have not attended a game at McKeon Park since the 2000 championship series between Hyannis and Brewster. Again, not fair to comment on a place I haven’t gone to for so long. Back in 2000, there was water running through right field and, in general, it was not a very nice place to watch a game. With the improvements that have been made in recent years, and with the addition of lights, I hope to make it to McKeon Park this year.
My favorite ballpark is Veterans Field in Chatham. Orleans and Cotuit are great places to watch a game. Those three places deserve the accolades they receive.
Y-D has made tremendous strides over the last decade. That is a very nice field and it is fun to go there. It would be difficult to get any closer to the action than watching a game while standing behind the dugouts at Wilson Field.
Whitehouse Field is a nice ballpark too. The scoreboard certainly is nice but that can’t be the only attraction. The bleachers aren’t the most comfortable, and the safety netting seems to make it a little less enjoyable to see through – more than other places that have safety netting for some reason. The outfield fence isn’t a bad place to watch from. Parking isn’t an issue and the field is in a nice setting.
Brewster is ready to begin their third season at Stony Brook School Field. It is a pretty good place to watch a game.
It is always good to go to a game at Spillane Field. There’s just something special about dusk turning to night and John Wylde’s voice on the public address system. I enjoy sitting in the stands on the third base side, or watching from behind the backstop, and being so close to the action.
No doubt, the best playing surface is in Bourne. With the addition of lights and some improvements to the seating area, Doran Park will join Veterans Field, Eldredge Park and Lowell Park at the top of the list.

Sorry, guys, Falmouth is a dump. It would be great if they could get a new park like Brewster and Bourne, especially if they could get it right on the water.

The City of Falmouth really should see Cape baseball as a key attraction just as they see the Falmouth Road Race. I still like to look at the old photos of Cape Baseball when it was played up on Falmouth Heights with majestic views of Vineyard Sound
