A hold out in the MLB Deal?
Posted by Greg | Filed Under News |
The Cape Cod Times reported today that five of six CCBL teams had reached agreement with the MLB in their dispute regarding license of big league team names for merchandise. The Bourne Braves, the Chatham A’s, the Harwich Mariners, the Hyannis Mets, the Orleans Cardinals and the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox — all members of the Cape Cod League — share names of Major League teams.
Commissioner Paul Galop told us recently that a deal was imminent (see post below).
See our letter to Commissioner Bud Selig on this matter.
The CC Times (Nate Sandals) reports that there is one hold out in the Cape League who has not reached an agreement. This is either a principled stance by one team, or a mere technicality.

You’ve got think that the hold out is the team that stands to lose the most financially…just a pure guess on my part….and my guess would be Chatham.
I couldn’t blame them. They sell a ton of merchandise, have one of the largest followings and any dent in merchandise sales would hurt. Again, just a guess on my part.
If the Chatham A’s are holding this up, they are costing the other teams a lot of money in MLB sponsorships. Considering how arrogant that organization is, I wouldn’t be surprised.
I don’t see arrogance on the Cape side — I see it on the MLB side.
Greg is absolutely right. The arrogance is on the part of MLB. It was said at the time that this story became public - and I feel more strongly now - that the $100,000.00 that MLB gives to the CCBL is a ridiculously small amount when you think of it in terms of it being just over a quarter of the salary of a utility infielder on a MLB roster. The MLB minimum salary for 2008 is $390,000.00. I’m sure that everyone involved with a CCBL team is very grateful for that money but it really is not a large sum when you think about it.
Wicker Man : Can you give examples of the arrogance of the Chatham organization ?
Not trying to give you a hard time, but your first post referred to Falmouth as “a dump.” At that time, I should have asked what exactly you meant. The playing surface, Fuller Field in general, the surrounding area ??
Now you say “considering how arrogant that organization is” when referring to Chatham. I’m not saying you are wrong, but I’m not ready to agree either. I would like to see at least a couple examples of this perceived arrogance. It is easy to make a statement, but it is always much better to support that statement with a couple examples.
You don’t see any arrogance in the Chatham organization? I’m not going to tee off on any specific team, but all I ask is you seek out any member of another organization and ask they if they feel Chatham is arrogant and see what they say. You can start by asking them about their broadcasters and their behavior on the road.
Regarding Falmouth’s field, I mean the overall field, not the surface. The surface seems pretty good and the lights are an improvement, but its an old park that isn’t pleasing to the eye. They deserve a much better facility, IMHO.
I think if I walk up to a member of another organization and randomly ask if they think the Chatham organization is arrogant, I’m probably not going to get a very direct answer.
If they do feel that way, they probably aren’t going to tell me.
If they don’t feel that way, they would probably want to know why I am asking such a question.
Maybe I’m wrong about that and I would be given a list of a dozen reasons why the A’s organization is arrogant.
I’ve heard people refer to the Chatham A’s as the New York Yankees of the CCBL. That isn’t meant as a compliment, I’m sure. If there are examples of arrogance, I would hope those examples wouldn’t be based on the college students who broadcast their games. I can’t imagine anyone is going to paint a whole organization as arrogant because of the broadcaster’s words or actions.
I think that Chatham is in pretty good shape financially compared to some of the other teams in the league. When I said that last year (not just mentioning Chatham), someone said that I was promoting the mistaken belief that there are “haves” and “have-nots” in the league.
Again, I’m not saying you are wrong. I’m just looking for examples of this arrogance that you refer to. Is it the players ? Not likely, since the players (mostly) change from year to year. John Schiffner ? From first-hand experience, I can say that he is not arrogant. Merchandise sales ? They sell A LOT of merchandise. If anyone is bothered by that, I think that would be more out of envy than arrogance on Chatham’s part. I don’t live on the Cape, so maybe there is some stuff that goes on that I’m not aware of.
I don’t think that the holdout team is Chatham. In fact, there is one team that as of this year no longer displays their shared MLB nickname anywhere on their uniform or hat and had been leaning towards a name change even before this whole situation. And I’m not even sure if it can even be considered a “holdout” by them at this point.
And that team would be…… the Hyannis Mets ??
