The Stretch Run

Wednesday was the last day on the Cape League calendar when every team will have a day off. The CCBL All Stars visited Fenway Park where they were recognized for their accomplishment. Hopefully they enjoyed a Fenway Frank and the attention they received from the crowd and the Red Sox organization. Hopefully they did not leave Fenway thinking that is how the game is played in the majors as the Red Sox made four errors in a 9-2 loss, getting swept in the three game series in the process. Now the Cape League heads into the stretch run. The regular season ends a week from today. Here is a look at Thursday’s games with the probable pitchers in parenthesis: Falmouth (Chris Gloor) @ Bourne (Nick McCully): Falmouth has been playing well, going 8-2 in their last...

Day 47: Crazy 8′s

Eights were wild across the CCBL landscape last night. Y-D scored 8 and won. Orleans scored 8 and lost. Cotuit and Bourne played to an 8-8 tie.  Chatham 9; Orleans 8: For the second night in a row, Chatham staged a furious comeback as they beat Orleans, 9-8. This game looked to be a good pitching matchup between Orleans’ Matt Thomson (San Diego) and Chatham’s Justin Marks (Louisville). The result of the game proved that looks can be deceiving. After rallying from a 4-0 ninth inning deficit to beat Bourne 9-4 on Monday, last night the A’s saw Orleans grab a 7-1 lead in the third inning. Thomson lasted only 4 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks. Four Cardinal relievers did not fare any better. Marks allowed 7 runs in 3 innings while...

Day 46: Roundup

It was a very interesting night of baseball in the CCBL on Monday. It was also a long night, as the Chatham-Bourne game went 13 innings and did not end until after 11:00. In that game, Chatham pulled off the most unlikely of comebacks. The Braves built a 4-0 lead going into the ninth inning. The A’s had scored two runs in that inning but were down to their last strike when Evan Ocheltree (Wake Forest) hit a two-run homerun to tie the game. Chatham scored five in the top of the 13th inning, four of those coming on a grand slam by Kyle Bellows (San Jose State), to put the game away. It was truly an amazing comeback by Chatham. The A’s had been shutout in 27 consecutive innings heading into the ninth. With Braves closer Eric Pettis (UC-Irvine)...

A Few Thoughts…..

A few thoughts on the past week in the CCBL after giving props to Greg and Andrew on the All Star game coverage that they provided. Nice job gentlemen! Orleans is the only sure-thing for the playoffs right now. The Cardinals have 46 points, while third place Brewster has 32, fourth place Chatham has 30 and last place Y-D has 29. In losing their last three games, Harwich (38 pts.) has left the door open for those three teams to challenge for the East’s second playoff spot. In the West, anything is possible. Falmouth leads the way with 37 pts., closely followed by Hyannis (36), Bourne (34) and Cotuit (33). A five game winning streak by Wareham provided a glimmer of hope for them to get in the playoff hunt but at 29 pts., and having played one more game...

2008 All-Star Game Attendance: 8629

The 2008 All-Star Game in Chatham is in the books, and it has the largest attendance record of any CCBL All-Star Game. The single-game attendance record remains in tact at >10,000–when Team USA played the Cape in 2000 at Chatham. That’s nearly 1/3rd of Chatham’s summer population. Here are the All-Star Game attendance figures that I could dig up from recent years: 2008, Chatham: 8629 (All-Star Game record crowd) 2007, Wareham: 5591 2006, Yarmouth-Dennis: 3761 2005, Hyannis: 4693 2004, Orleans: 4380 2003, Falmouth: 5932 2002, Harwich: 5787 2001, Falmouth: 3550 2000, Brewster: >4000 1999, Wareham: 4000 1998, Chatham:...
