The Cape League playing games in Brockton and New Bedford is an absolute joke. If "The Queen" wants to sell the league's soul to off Cape cities, then the league risks losing its Cape Cod appeal. Seriously, did Orleans really have to drive all that way to New Bedford to play Wareham? I don't get it.

The Brockton experiment was also laughable. The fact that they had to sell tickets and beer at a Cape League event is startling. The league should be ashamed it felt the need to pander itself to a city 50 miles away from Cape Cod.

MikeD (didn't you play in the Beastie Boys?) asks an interesting question about the name changes. I think most, if not all, will change. For the life of me, I dont understand why the "brain trust" in the Cape League can't tell MLB to shove it and allow them to keep the names.

Here are my suggestions for nicknames :):

Hyannis Drinkin' Senators (ay rup:))
Yarmouth Dennis Dennis Yarmouths.
Orleans Attendance Fabricators
Chatham Arrogants (they can still keep the A's)
Bourne Bridges
Harwich Hangovers

Mikey D...good point about the Falmouth scoreboard...forgot about that one.

And on Brewster..I mentioned earlier that for such a new ballpark, it is not a great facilty but it does have potential. I think both Brewster and Bourne need to upgrade their "fan areas" with more and/or better seating.

I think part of what makes Chatham work is its' proximity to the best downtown area on the Cape. That helps with parking as people can park downtown and walk back up to the ballpark. It is great going their and being able to grab dinner before the game and walk up to the ballfield and then walk back for a beer or to just enjoy the downtown. Other than maybe Falmouth, that experience is unmatched in the league.

YD allows you one of the dwindling "plop your beach chair" down or standing room options in the league; that is what gives the field its' atmoshpere. With Cotuit adding seating, Bourne with a new park and less grass seating like they had at the old park and Brewster with a new ballpark, those options are less than they were a few years ago.

Some other "musings" -

- Doesn't the CC Times blog seem very "Hyannis" leaning?

- With less than 1000 fans in Brockton, do you think the league is disapointed and will rethink Brockton going forward?

- YD has had the same "notes" section on their website since the July 4th weekend.

more very random musings;

A couple of teams try hard to be accurate with their attendance...note that they are usually at or near the bottom of the list! I think the universe has realigned as Orleans and Chatham are again #1 and 2..cough cough 1800 fans at Brewster, yea right

Whats better, having baseball fans at your games or tourists stopping by which boosts attendance? I guess it doesn't matter as long as they spend a little money!

Scoreboard in Falmouth is much worse than Hyannis, especially for folks sitting on the away side. Pressbox looks like its going to collapse at any moment.
Harwich, Brewster (except for the 1987 teal color) and Bourne have nice scoreboards.

Good one w/ whiny crowd...Cotuit wins hands down.

Wareham, Cotuit, Bourne have great spots for the scouts.

Brewster is one of the worst places for a visitor to see a game, very poor layout and their press/shoe box could have been so much more.

Plenty of parking in Wareham, Bourne, Harwich, Brewster, YD

There is something about YD's park that makes it very inviting and comfortable to watch a game.

Lousy parking in Cotuit and Chatham...where are all the cars going to park for the All Star game???

New bleachers in Cotuit....nice but very noisy when all the kids are stomping around.

Haven't seen any better lights that Bourne so far.

How many teams are going to change their names next year....should be interesting.

I don't disagree with you. I'm just saying the folks I watched the Hyannis/Orleans game with at McKeon Park the other night nearly rolled over when I said that Hyannis reported 2500+ in attendance that night. It was a great ballgame too.

Orleans and Chatham always compete with attendance. Teams lie because they can tell their sponsors, "advertise with the Cardinals because 2,800 people a night come to our games!" Its all BS. Orleans is notorious for it and a lot of the people in the league I talk with laugh about it regularly.

I guess that is the issue "Ball Fan". This silly issue, in my opinion, has become competitive between some of the franchises and I think in their minds, that number becomes reflective of the organization and therefore a competitive situation.

Because the standings include the attendance rankings, there is a natural tendancy to want to be on top; not matter how silly. Just my opinion.

I don't understand the mass complaint about the attendance numbers in Orleans. They might be estimated too high but they are everywhere, not just there. I was in Hyannis the other night for their game against Orleans and they reported 2500... There weren't that many there even if you count the real attendance and add those who stayed past the ninth inning to it again. There have been cases of over-reporting in Chatham, Y-D and another game I attended in Brewster where they claimed they had 1800 or something like that and I think 500 or 600 would have been a better guess. It happens everywhere so there is no use in complaining anymore. It is not like it affects the games themselves anyway so I think they should just be thrown out the window personally. It's pretty silly if you ask me.

Parking is a good one....I just don't know how you can say Wareham. You have parking at the top of the field, parking behind the pressbox, parking by and along the softball field and parking by the track; albeit that parking is far away. Cotuit parking is tough because while they have a close lot, you mostly have to navigate your way around the streets where no parking signs are aplenty.

I agree with what has been said about Chatham which points to how important chemistry is in such a short season. And I'm sure Wareham expected that there was a good chance the Minor and Dietrich were going to USA but they might not have expected Kendal Volz and Josh Phegley to make the team.

I think the worst pressbox is in Brewster. How do you build such a small and simple pressbox at a brand new facility? The best? Tie between Cotuit and Wareham.

Best place to set down a lawn chair - TIE: Just beyond the 3rd baseline in Brewster..you are on top of the dugout and right behind 3rd base. Hard to get closer to the field anywhere AND behind the fence in between the pressbox and dugout in Falmouth on the 3rd base side. Again, really close. WORST PLACE - Anywhere in Wareham

Crowd that WHINES the most - Cotuit

Best scoreboard - Harwich, Worst - Hyannis

Best spot for scouts - The deck in Wareham, Worst - Chatham (Where do they go?)

Hardest place to Hit a Homerun - Wareham, Easiest - YD
