Day 36: Cut Short

Just a fun photo today from last night’s action:

Lightning at Doran Park

“A fierce lightning storm in the area shortened Cape Cod Baseball League action between the Bourne Braves and Harwich Mariners on July 18, 2008 at Doran Park by half an inning depriving the Braves of their last at bat and chance to tie the game. Harwich won by a score of 7-6.” - CapeHomepage.com

All Stars are announced see league website or Wareham Gatemen website where you will find information.

No Dustin Ackley…another sign that perhaps he is hurt or went home.

A woman who hosts a Harwich pitcher told me that she thinks Ackley went home to have surgery on bone spurs and is done for the season. The good news is that Andrew Giobbi doubled in his first at bat since being hit in the face by a pitch several weeks ago during the Mariners’ offensive explosion against the Y-D Red Sox on Saturday, July 19, 2008.

Thanks Joseph….if Harwich updated their website like Chatham or Wareham, we’d have that information. Plus, if the Cape Cod Times wasn’t stuck in Hyannis, perhaps they would have that news. Ackley is the highest profile player on the Cape this year and to go this many games without any news is a shame. Then again, I suppose the CCBL likes this “under the radar” or “away from the main-stream media” approach. Personally, I’d like to see the CCBL webite cover the league like Baseball America rather than like a tourism and promotional website. Wareham and Chatham report things as they happen…roster moves, injury updates, etc. The league website should have a “news” division rather than focusing on features and promotional items…there is room for both.

I agree CapeMan. I’m just glad that I got a chance to shoot some photographs of Ackley in a Harwich uniform during his brief stay on the Cape. I know he played in one game which I attended in Harwich. I’m sure that I have uploaded several pictures of him at bat, but I am going to have to dig through my photos to see which ones he’s in since Harwich does not display player numbers on the front of their jerseys. Another pieve of mine.

Word around metro-Cotuit is that Danny Meszaros has signed a pro contract and has left the Kettleers.

That is a huge blow for Cotuit…again…that kid has some filthy stuff…and was on my “top 10″ from another post.

My son and I are a big fans of Dustin Ackley. We try to follow him when we can’t get to his games. I was concerned too when I was looking at the box scores of the games he played in at the Cape. I noticed after 8 games in the outfield, he then was put in the DH spot before he didn’t show up in the lineup anymore. I hate to hear that his throwing arm is still not right and needs surgery despite rehab all last summer and playing first base again during the 08 season. I hear that outfield is where the scouts want him because of his speed, but so far his arm has not allowed him to be an everyday player in that position. Thank goodness the problem with his arm hasn’t slowed his bat down!

Does anyone know for sure if Ackley has left the Cape? The team stats on the Cape Cod baseball site are not showing that he has left.
