Day 40: Orleans-Brewster Battle to Scoreless Tie; Chatham Loses
Posted by Dave | Filed Under Games | 3 Comments
In games with playoff implications in the East, Orleans and Brewster played to a 0-0 ten inning tie on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Y-D defeated Chatham, 3-0.
In Brewster, four Cardinals’ and three Whitecaps’ pitchers combined on the shutout. Brad Stillings (Kent State) started and went the first five innings. He was followed to the mound by by Justin Earls (Georgia), Matt Thomson (San Diego)and Adam Wilk (Long Beach State). Stillings gave up six hits and one walk. The Cardinals bullpen allowed only one hit and a walk over the last five innings.
Rob Gilliam (UNC-Greensboro) started and went six innings for Brewster, allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out five. Buddy Baumann (Missouri State) pitched three innings of one-hit ball and Rory McKean (Mississippi) pitched the tenth inning.
Brewster had seven hits in the game while Orleans was limited to four hits.
In the Red Sox win over the A’s, Tyler Waldron (University of the Pacific) pitched seven innings. Shawn Tolleson (Baylor) and Dean Weaver (Georgia) combined to limit Chatham to one hit in the last two innings. D’Angelo Mack (South Carolina) scored a run and knocked in a run for Y-D. Chatham has now been shutout two nights in a row. The A’s had not been shutout this year until Harwich beat them 7-0 last night. Kyle Blair (San Diego) started for Chatham and gave up all three runs in four innings of work. With the win, Y-D (29 pts.) has pulled to within one point of Chatham and Brewster.
Harwich can put a stranglehold on a playoff spot with wins against Hyannis tonight and at Falmouth tomorrow. The Mariners lead Chatham and Brewster by 8 points going into tonight’s game at Whitehouse Field. Let’s not forget that, despite Orleans torrid pace in the month of July, Harwich began the day only five points behind the Cardinals. Tomorrow’s game against the Commodores is the game-in-hand that Harwich holds over Chatham, Brewster and Y-D.

How many extra innings games have there been this season?
Greg…12 according to the league stats.
Checking the boxscores, I came up with 13 extra inning games. Last night’s game between Orleans and Brewster was the only one to end in a tie. The longest game was played on June 29 when Bourne beat Falmouth 4-2 in 15 innings.
Harwich has been involved in 6 of those games, going 2-4. Orleans has played 4 extra inning games. Chatham, Bourne and Hyannis have each been involved in 3. Wareham (win), Brewster (tie) and Y-D (loss) have only gone to extras once.
Orleans (3-0-1) and Bourne (3-0) have benefitted the most from working overtime. Things have not gone so well for Harwich (2-4) and Falmouth (0-2). Rounding out the other teams, Cotuit is 1-1 and Hyannis and Chatham are 1-2.
