Cotuit Clinches, Wins Patriot Cup

I’m not sure which outcome excited the Cotuit Ketleer crowd more — clinching a berth in the Cape League playoffs or winning the Barnstable Patriot Cup.  Either way, Cotuit’s defeat earlier today of Hyannis 5-3 achieved both results.

The Hyannis Mets and Cotuit Ketleer faithful showed up in force at 11 am today at Lowell Park in Cotuit.  The game today made up yesterday’s rain out.

The game was mostly a pitching duel between Cotuit’s Seth Blair (Arizona State) and Hyannis’ Will Weidig (Brown).  Blair got the win with 7 innings pitched, no runs and 6 hits.  Weidig pitched 6 innings and gave up 2 runs on 5 hits.  He struck out 6 batters and walked just one.

The real story was Hyannis’ inability to convert men on base.  They stranded a dozen runners, many of them in scoring position.  Cotuit took the bat out of the hands homerun-hitting Chris Dominguez twice (once on the first inning and again in the 7th).

Cotuit’s Michael Gilmartin ((Wofford) went 3-for-4 at the plate, including an RBI single.  Cotuit’s middle of the order was all 0-for-nothing.  The bottom of the order, Jeff Kobernus (Ko-BAM) was 1-3, Kevin Patterson (Auburn) was 1-3 and Robert Stock (USC) was 2-3 with an RBI.

Hyannis’ Marcus Jones (NC State) was 2-5.

It appeared that Daniel Wolford (Cal Berkeley) would get the save for Cotuit but he was pulled in the ninth with one out after he walked a batter and then gave a single.  Drew Storen (Stanford) managed to get the save but a run charged to Wolford managed to score on a dribbler to first.  Dominguez grounded out to second to end the game.

There were fireworks early in the game when Cotuit manager Mike Roberts came out to argue with the first base umpire, Harry Greer, who had just been awarded the Curly Clement Award for outstanding umpiring.  Greer called Marcus Jones of the Mets safe at second after he had legged out a line drive to deep left. Roberts returned to the dugout but could be heard yelling for sometime after the play.  Greer then warned Roberts from his position between first and second.  Roberts then asked to know what he was being warned about.  The homeplate umpire worked hard to settle the matter and it eventually calmed down.

A few final notes:

  • I had the great privilege today of interviewing Ivan “Have a Hit” Partridge for a future CodBall Conversation.  Stay tuned for that one.
  • Cotuit’s first baseman, Kevin Patterson (Auburn) took home the Danny Silver Award for outstanding sportsmanship.

    In the other early game…not that it matters…Chatham lost to Wareham 5-4. Robby Broach struck out 10 batters in only 5 and a 1/3 innings. Wareham used only 2 pitchers desptie Broach’s inning count (Zach Brewster pitched the final 3 innings) so they should have plenty of pitchers available to throw at Bourne tonight in an imporant game for the Braves.

    Sorry about that. Is there a source somewhere for umps this year? I looked in the media guide but didn’t see names.

    I wrote that Hyannis stranded 12 even though my scorebook said 11. At the end of the game I heard the announcer say 12 so I corrected my record. Tonight on the Hyannis broadcast I heard them say 11.

    They are now into the 5th inning and Hyannis is still leaving men on base — 4 more.
