Game 3 of the Western Division Playoffs has been rescheduled to August 12th at 3pm at Lowell Park in Cotuit. Today’s showers on the Cape made it impossible to get the game in. This leaves very little wiggle room before the August 15th deadline. There’s a 40% chance of showers on Thursday according to Weather.com.

Given the fact that there are no lights at Lowell Park, this limits the flexibility in terms of trying to get this game in today…or completed today. The game will be played with the “9 inning rule”; meaning that if it rains or if it gets dark, it doesn’t matter if an “official game” has been played, the game must go the traditional 9 innings.

I wonder if they would ever consider using a neutral field that has lights to complete the game simply because the best window to play and/or finish the game because of the weather forecast? Hyannis would seem the most logical spot since I don’t see Cotuit agreeing to give Falmouth the advantage of playing at home. Just a thought.

On a related note, it is a shame that the Cape Cod League always seems squeezed by time. Whether at the end of the college season when teams are trying to get roster players into town or the furious scramble to make-up rain dates and now the juggling of playoff games, the league really has to accomodate outside factors while trying to maintain its’ own sense of integrity and reputation.

When you step back and look at things objectively, it is really amazing how this league functions entirely on the backs of volunteers from the top executives down to retirees and kids selling 50/50 raffle tickets. Now, at the most important and exciting time of the year, these volunteers are at the mercy of mother nature and the “rules” of other institutions such as the NCAA and the Colleges and Universities…all money making organizations run by paid individuals. What a contrast! Despite this contrast, these volunteers have the incredible skill and talent to deal with these outside influences and somehow do it without pounding their chests or making anyone feel bad for “the little old Cape Cod Baseball League.”

We might complain from time to time about broadcasting or players going home early or poor websites or whatever it might be….and I’m not excusing poor efforts because even though you volunteer to do something, you should take that commitment seriously…but when you step back and take a look at this objectively and then consider how really fast the season goes by and the night in and night out AND year around effort that is put forth, it is really remarkable.

Capeman, the priorities for these players are their schools, not there summer ball teams. If the league shaved 4 games off the regular season schedule and played 40, they could start the playoffs a week earlier and not have this problem.

Personally, I hope it rains again today just to see what the league will do.

Of course…that wasn’t my point WickerMan. At the same time, I think A LOT of personal sacrifice and time is donated by a lot of people in support of these kids and the fact that it is the league is always taking a hit due to outside influences is sometimes a shame.

Not to jinx anything, but the skies are clearing nicely here in Cotuit. I think the CCBL may get lucky.

Forecast is for rain after 1pm today. I guess if this game does rain out again, they’d have a morning game tomorrow?

I just really think they should look at ALL options for playing today; including playing under the lights in Hyannis, Falmouth or Wareham. If the forecast is really for rain after 1:00 but they think it will clear up by 7 or 8:00, why not play it tonight? I understand that Cotuit would lose the home field advantage but if the weather is iffy anyway OR the game is played tomorrow morning, what kind of crowd is really going to show up anyway?

Cotuit has just beaten the Falmouth Commodores and will face the Harwich Mariners tomorrow in game one of the championship.

Congrats to Cotuit. I felt they were the best team in the west from the All Star Game on. I’d like to see the final series competitive, but I thought the winner of today’s Cot-Falmouth game would ultimately be the champion this year.
