Update to Trademark Issue
For the latest news regarding the ongoing negotiations over trademark law between MLB and the Cape League, check out Rob Duca’s story in today’s Cape Cod Times: http://www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20081031/SPORTS/81030019 For people who have been following this issue, there isn’t much new information here; but it seems the end of the story is near - for now. The issue may resurface each year for the four teams who have chosen to keep their nicknames. Read MoreOrleans’ Preliminary Roster
We may not know what nickname the Orleans franchise will choose to go with for the 2009 season, but we can get an early look at what the team might look like on the field. By my count, there are nine returning players on their preliminary roster. Rob Catapano (UNC) played for Orleans in 2007. Michael Olt (UConn) was a late-season addition to the Orleans roster this past season. Other players who are familiar with Eldredge Park are Gary Brown (Cal State-Fullerton), Elliot Glynn (UConn), Shaun Kort (Nevada), Rob Rasmussen (UCLA), Hampton Tignor (Florida) and Martin Viramontes (Loyola Marymount). Duke’s Alex Hassan also plans to return to Orleans. Hassan was instrumental in leading Orleans to first place in the East this past summer. Playing...

For an early look at the Cotuit Kettleers roster, go to: http://www.kettleers.org/2009roster.htm The Kettleers have signed an impressive collection of talent, led by returnees Kevin Patterson (Auburn) and Seth Blair (Arizona State), both of whom were 2008 CCBL all stars. Brandon Cumpton (Georgia Tech) and Drew Storen (Stanford) also return to Cotuit for a second season. Two of the more interesting players to follow will be Gerrit Cole (UCLA) and Chance Ruffin (Texas). Ruffin is a highly regarded sophomore, righthanded pitcher. Cole was the first round pick of the New York Yankees (28th overall) in this past June’s MLB draft. Going into the draft, Cole was ranked as the 17th best prospect in the country by Baseball America. He is a 6’3″...

Bourne will remain the “Braves”, according to Cape League Insider. It is unclear if this decision is for the 2009 season only or indefinitely. This puts to rest the name change that was rumored in the CodBall comments. Chatham changed their name to the Anglers last week in response to the new licensing agreements with Major League Baseball. (Thanks to Willie for the...

I don’t usually take press releases, but tonight’s Game 7 between the Rays and Red Sox deserves a good, solid salute to those who played on the Cape before they lived the dream. Below is a great piece from Joe Sherman about tonight’s players. CCBL Press Release (Original press release at Capecodbaseball.org) Regardless of the outcome of tonight’s ALCS game six in St. Petersburg, the Cape Cod Baseball League, America’s premier summer collegiate league, would like to congratulate our graduates who are participating in this historic series. Ten members of the playoff roster of the defending World Champion Boston Red Sox are CCBL alumni, as are four players on the newly crowned AL East Champion Tampa Bay Rays. In addition, one Boston...
