Gatemen Make Additions to Roster

Posted by Dave | Filed Under News |

The Wareham Gatemen have added 16 players to their roster. Go to  http://www.gatemen.org/roster.htm to view the complete roster.

One of the new additions in Wareham in 2009 will be Ryan LaMarre, a highly touted sophomore outfielder from Michigan whom the Wolverines coaching staff wanted to see come to the Cape. LaMarre batted .305 as a freshman. He is one of that very small percentage of ballplayers who bats righthanded while throwing lefthanded.

It is no surprise to see Jack Armstrong’s (Vanderbilt) name on the roster.  Armstrong has known since 2007 that, barring unforseen circumstances, he would be pitching in Wareham in 2009.   When the 6′7″ righthander takes to the mound at Spillane Field, it will not be the first time he has done so. In July, 2007, he pitched an inning of perfect relief in the Cape Cod High School Classic. Armstrong’s dad, Jack Sr., starred for Wareham in 1986-’87 before his major league career led him to the Reds, Indians, Marlins and Rangers over the next seven seasons. The elder Armstrong is the answer to the trivia question, ”Who was the first pitcher to start both a Cape League All-Star Game and a Major League All-Star Game?” Armstrong started for the National League in 1990, the same year he won a World Series game while with the Reds.

For a little New England flavor, three UConn players grace the Gatemen roster. Pitchers David Fischer and Matt Barnes will be joined by fellow Huskie, outfielder George Springer.

Good find Dave. There are a couple more interesting names on their roster. Derek Dietrich…national freshman all-everything…is back on the Gatemen roster after playing for USA. Let’s hope USA doesn’t grab Brandon Workman; also back on the roster. Zach Wilson from Arizona State is a highlist from ASU’s top ranked recruiting class and Scott Rembisz from Fla Intl is JUCO all-everything and played for USA, I believe, at some level.

An interesting note is that there are no Baylor players on the Wareham roster. (seems like there has been a Baylor-Wareham connection forever) The pitching staff is loaded with Texas Longhorns. Workman, along with Jungman and Cole Green. Aside from Dallas Keuchel, I believe Wareham has most of their entire starting pitching rotation back. (Workman, Broach, Perlman)

It’s good to see some good offseasn, Cape-League news!!!

That looks like a nice roster. Any updates on the possible name changes for any of the 6 teams?

The inability to purchase certain merchandise online maybe is a clue?

@Willie you can still purchase from the Hyannis Mets and Bourne Braves. The A’s and the Mariners just seem to be updating their sites. The Cardinals never had a store. The Red Sox seem to have discontinued this option.

I think the only update we have is from August 31st: http://capecodbaseball.org/News/news2008/NewsCCBL_31Aug08.htm and CodBall: http://www.codball.com/2008/08/31/mlb-and-cape-league-announce-deal/

Thanks AW, the sites say this:

At this time we are not accepting new orders for merchandise. You can visit our souveniers shop at all Braves Home games at Doran Park. Click here for the updated schedule.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

    @Willie

I guess the Mets are the only team still accepting orders…

This is definitely an interesting observation.

Been following this story as well as MLB also picking on youth baseball and the usage of their team nicknames. In the business world, one shouldn’t be forced to purchase from mandated suppliers. That is called unfair competition??

Hope the CCBL keeps doing business locally as far as uniforms, apparel, and souvenirs

I think there are some rather simple explanations for the website’s not providing merchandise options. Bourne hasn’t had stuff available on their site since long before this issue. Harwich has a brand new website that was launched during the season. Now Chatham…that is interesting but if they are doing what they say according to their message, this is the time to do it….just after the season and before the holidays.

Inside source within the Braves organization told me this morning that last night the Bourne team voted to change their name. The new nickname?

    “The Fighting Wamps”.

Apparently, they wanted to keep the Native American theme and felt honoring the local tribe was a good idea.

  9. Wille on October 9th, 2008 7:29 pm

Wasn’t WAMP from the movie War Games?

Anyway, the Bourne team posted their initial roster

I would be surprised by the Wamp name. I suspect you’re being funny, Backstop. There are a lot of reasons why that name could be confusing. Where to start?

I would need some historical context.

  11. Backstop on October 10th, 2008 10:14 am

The Wamps are an Indian tribe on the Cape and SE Mass. I’d be surprised if Bourne’s GM supported the name because considering he’s an extreme liberal, the Political Correctness issue would be a huge issue for him. I guess we’ll see.

  12. Andrew Wirtanen on October 11th, 2008 9:01 am

More info on the tribe if you are curious:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wampanoag

Like Greg, I’m also assuming Backstop is being funny. I don’t think any teams are changing their names, but I guess we will see.

This quote from the press release may infer that the agreement may be a little unique, meaning not standard.

“We all worked diligently on this agreement and we feel it is workable and reasonable.”

The issue over who makes/supplies the uniforms, apparel, and souvenirs is very important. Majestic, or any other approved MFG doesn’t support the CCBL directly unless someone knows differently, but the locals do.

For a $100,000 grant, what amount would be traded off in local support? What is the net difference?

MLB is starting to force/threaten youth leagues to buy from THAT certain uniform company for the right to share a team nickname. Maybe someone needs to review MLB’s investment portfolio to see if they hold major shares in said uniform company….

Zach Roca at South Coast Today has a story that merits reading. He interviews John Wylde about Tampa Bay’s Carlos Pena.

Wylde told me after he left the hospital that Carlos had been concerned about Wylde’s illness and had stayed in touch. A classy story about a classy guy….
