Chatham Changes Name to Anglers

Posted by Andrew | Filed Under News |

It’s official: the Chatham Athletics are officially the Chatham Anglers. See the Chatham A’s press release on their website.

When I received the news this morning, it came almost as an April Fools’ Day Moment. As Cape League fans, we are all attached to every team’s nickname. However, I think the Anglers nickname is a very suitable change that will represent the fishing community, and also have a minimal impact on merchandise (typically sold with the A’s logo).

Post your thoughts in the comments.

Throughout the day, on the league’s email distribution list, there has been a lot of positive energy generated about the new name and logo.

Congratulations to the Anglers! I love the name.

Great move by Chatham!! Good name and a nice, aggressive move against MLB.

I agree. Great move! I like the name “Anglers” and I especially like the color scheme and logo. The “A” is the same font as the “A” they used last year and with the “S” being a fish hook, and the use of the baseball bats, it really works! I am also happy to see the Chatham organization take a stand against MLB while supporting local merchants.
I found it interesting that in one of the articles I read yesterday, it was said that Harwich, Y-D and Hyannis have decided to keep their nicknames for at least the next year. No official decision has been announced from the Bourne or Orleans organizations as to which direction they will go, but Commissioner Paul Galop has said that those two organizations are likely to make a name change. Anglers is is nice sounding name. I found it curious that the Harwich Mariners had their team name before the Seattle Mariners (Pilots) did. Therefore, are the major league Mariners infringing on the team name of the Harwich Mariners? Just a thought. Anyone have an answer.

    On a completely unrelated topic…

Last night’s Sox game (2nd greatest comeback in postseason history!) was decided by two former Gatemen - Justin Masterson getting the win and JP Howell (played for the Gatemen and Braves) taking the loss. To go even further, on the play that kept the game going in the 9th, Youk (Braves) hit a ground ball to 3rd, where Longoria (the team formally known as the A’s) made an errant throw to first where Pena (Gatemen) wasn’t able to dig it out of the dirt. Just thought all of this was pretty cool to see, just magnifying the importance of the Cape League in the postseason.

Todd, thanks for that observation. I hadn’t realized that. I have found that final moments in big, post-season games have been decided by former Cape League players. It’s a great observation.

It occurred to me this weekend that it would have been funny (to baseball historians) if the Chatham A’s had take on some new name like the White Elephants.

Anglers, huh? I can’t wait for the first game between the Anglers and Wamps at Bourne. :)

Any news on Bourne or Orleans as far as name changes? A little birdie on the Cape indicated that Orleans may be leaning toward (and taking a vote upon) the name Thunderbirds…I don’t have much to substantiate this, though. Great job by Chatham in settling on their new name. Any news on Bourne or Orleans is much appreciated…

Randall: It was reported by Russ Charpentier in the Cape Cod Times Sports Buzz blog on 10/22 that Bourne will keep the Braves nickname. Here is what he reported… “The Bourne Braves live on. Bourne PR director Darin Weeks sent along an email this week to let us know Bourne’s Cape Cod Baseball League’s entry will remain the Braves and has notified the league. Last week, Chatham changed its name from the Athletics to the Anglers in response to an agreement with Major League Baseball that makes it more expensive to use a nickname copyrighted by MLB.”
