Read More“Beach Chairs” Author is Back on Examiner.com
Steve Weissman, author of “Beach Chairs and Baseball Bats: A Celebration of the Cape Cod Baseball League”, is once again talkin’ baseball. Per an email I received from him today, he has accepted a position with Examiner.com and will be in charge of the Boston Baseball Examiner, where he will talk about general baseball and the Cape league. His latest post talks about the upcoming Hall of Fame results (to be announced Monday, January 12). Steve’s Beach Chairs and Baseball Bats (2005) was one of the latest books on the Cape League to be published. While some of the fields and team names have changed since then, the book is one of the best ways to be introduced to the CCBL. It’s very easy to read and a good addition to any baseball...
Read MoreOrleans Cardinals Change Name to Firebirds
A few little birds told us this summer that the Orleans Cardinals would change their name over the winter. News today from Orleans is that the Cardinals are becoming the Firebirds. The songbirds are upgrading to raptors. Congratulations to the Orleans Firebirds organization. I can’t wait to purchase new Chatham Anglers and Orleans Firebirds baseball caps! The change was caused by MLB’s challenge of the Cape League’s use of several MLB team names, like the Mariners, Cardinals, A’s, Red Sox and...
Read MoreBravo, MLB Network!
When I was a kid, I loved watching A Charlie Brown Christmas and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. Problem was that if you missed the program back in the 1970s and ’80′s you had to wait another year. There were no analog or digital recordings available to most families. If you wanted to see a classic World Series or All-Star game, forget about it. Technololgy solved that. In the 1990s you could buy a VHS or beta cassette recording. It became easy to watch your favorite holiday shows in July. Until the advent of iTunes, I had a similar problem with baseball. I love to watch old baseball games, movies and shows. Truth is I would watch most things baseball-related for any free time I have — airplane rides, late night viewing, Saturday morning,...
Read MoreUpdate on John Wylde
In what appears to be an exclusive, the South Coast Today newspaper is reporting that John Wylde, the beloved leader of the Wareham Gatemen, is cancer-free. CodBall has reported extensively on Mr. Wylde’s battle with cancer, which had been described as inoperable. I am not sure if John Couture of the South Coast Today paper stumbled upon this story as part of his reporting on the new team in New Bedford or if this was an an intended update on Mr. Wylde’s health. It is curious that we have not seen any other report on the Gatemen website or in the Cape Cod Times, which has reported on his health in the past. My apologies if we have missed a report. I have emailed Mr. Wylde for his own update. Either way, we continue to keep Mr. Wylde in our thoughts and...
