Countdown to College Baseball
Posted by Greg | Filed Under News | 10 Comments
Don’t hate me for this, but Super Bowl Sunday is a joyous occasion for me because it means football is finally over and college baseball is only days away. The Baseball America clock shows 17 days and counting until major college baseball gets underway. Thank God!
The College Baseball Blog is always your best source for up-to-the-minute news about what’s happening in college baseball. I wouldn’t have known about midnight baseball practice without it.
I’ve just been comparing Sporting News’ rankings to Baseball America’s. I’ve also looked at the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason rankings. Of course there is no agreement except that Sporting News and BA agree that Texas is #4.
(I would like to the Sporting News college baseball section except that they make it impossible to do so. If someone wants to help me get to their magazine’s excellent preseason section I will link to it but I can’t seem to find it online.)
Sporting News selected North Carolina as #1. Baseball America believes Texas A&M is #1. And NCBWA selected Arizona State. I continue to believe that AZ State is due, but it’s hard to count the perenial powerhouse that is NC out.
The names on rosters of this year’s collegiate preseason top 25 read like a Cape Cod League all-star list.

I saw that same countdown clock…. seems like it has been an unusually long off-season this year. Very quiet on the news front too with the exception of the random CCBL website update or a couple of the usual teams that update their site.
The Cape League is doing a hot stove conversation this week with press and others. We’re hoping to send someone and provide a report. If anyone else makes please let us know.
Greg-
Anything specific that you know will be covered at the hot stove even?
That’s a first isn’t it Greg? Perhaps this is when they announce “Fenway”?
They better announce the All-Star Game… I’m trying to make my summer plans!
My sense is that they will hand out 10 information sheets from the franchises and the new list of 760-plus former Cape Leaguers who’ve played in the major leagues from Jumpin Joe Dugan and Baseball Hall of Famer Pie Traynor (Falmouth 1919) to Justin Masterson (Wareham 2005).
They are certain to hand out a 2009 CCBL schedule (already up on the league web-site). They will highlight special events such as the military games at Bourne and Brewster, season-opener between Cotuit and harwich, All-Star game, Falmouth playing on Martha’s Vineyard, Scouts Days and the playoffs
That’s all I know for now.
I assume they’ll also go over the new playoff format and the two new team names for Chatham and Orleans. It has to include the Fenway announcement. Like I said, I don’t think they’ve ever done a “hot stove event” like this and it seems logical to do your first one when you have some big news to announce.
With those team info sheets, will we finally see the last three rosters?
Anyone know where and when the Hot Stove presentation will take place?
anyone want to paste some Sporting News stuff?
