Biography of a Cape League Legend?

(pictured) of the New Bedford Standard-Times is at work on a very special biography about Cape Cod Baseball League legend John Wylde. For the uninitiated, Mr. Wylde has been the driving force behind the Wareham Gatemen and the central reason why the Cape League has the most reliable player statistics in summer college baseball.
Zach and I spoke by phone last week about the project and have exchanged a few emails. The working title of his project is, “Ladies and Gentlemen, John Wylde: the voice of the Cape Cod League and his touching 25th season with ‘his boys.’”
Mr. Wylde has been a frequent guest on CodBall’s podcasts. Last year he was diagnosed with inoperable cancer, leading to an outpouring of support throughout baseball. He was rushed into the Cape League Hall of Fame last year, and despite his illness is readying himself and his team for the 2009 season.
Zach is a trusted and insightful author for a project like this. He covered the Gatemen for his paper. His plan is to follow Mr. Wylde during this season as a window into his life, his commitment and the league he loves.
I contacted Mr. Wylde by email this week and he confirms the project and his excitement about seeing the publication when it’s completed.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the New Bedford Standard Times is the only daily paper that covers one team exclusively. The CC Times covers the league as a whole but the game stories are simple recaps where the Gatemen get more exclusive coverage on a day in day out basis from the Standard Times. Perhaps this is one benefit of being on the other side of the bridge.
