wyldeEDITOR’S NOTE: I received word by phone this morning of John’s passing, and the media advisory below was issued today by the Cape Cod Baseball League. CodBall has devoted a lot of space and time to the words and wisdom of John Wylde. We encourage you to type his name into the search function of the blog to read the stories and interviews. All of us at CodBall mourn his passing and offer our thanks to his enormous contributions to baseball. I am very sad but also very appreciative.

Veteran and distinguished Wareham Gatemen president and GM John Wylde, died early this morning after a long and heroic battle with cancer.

Wylde, who also served as head statistician and official scorer, official tryout coordinator, a Major League Baseball liaison and record-keeper in the Cape Cod Baseball League and driving force behind the Wareham Gatemen for the past quarter-century, died early this morning from liver cancer that was diagnosed in the fall of 2007. He was 70 years old.

From everything I’ve read and heard, John Wylde has left a mark on this league and the game of baseball that will be felt for a long time.

I think I speak for many “Codballers” when I say that John, his family and the Gatemen family are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Andrew/Greg, I thought I’d pass along a link to the notice on John’s passing from Harvard’s website. John (class of ’60) remained an avid Crimson supporter to the end.

As a freelance writer covering the CCBL, I was lucky to interact often with John over the past several years. In a league loaded with nice guys, there were none that came any nicer than him.

By the way, I came across three audio interviews from with John that you’d uploaded as podcasts:

Unfortunately, the mp3 links are dead, so if there’s any way they can be hosted elsewhere it would be appreciated. The man’s voice deserves to be heard by those who missed it.

Thanks for all your great work on this blog, guys.

    Hi Mark,

I am working on the podcasts issue. Thanks for reporting it.

    Thanks!

The Gatemen website, at the end of their story about John Wylde, lists a number of links to articles about Mr. Wylde’s passing. Most interesting is a piece by Allan Simpson where he notes that the name for “Baseball America” was developed in John Wylde’s living room.
