Early Look at the ’09 Commodores

There are 29 players on the roster, with four of those players listed as temps. The roster includes seven possible returnees. Joey Wong, Kevin Nolan, Brian Fletcher, Rob Segedin, Chad Bettis, Evan Danielli and Nick Tepesch all wore the maroon and black last summer. Hunter Morris was on Falmouth’s preseason roster last year but did not play on the Cape.
Joey Wong appears to be returning for a third season. He played on Oregon State’s back-to-back NCAA championship teams and has been a defensive sensation at short in the Cape League. Is he a major league prospect?
@Greg – Very interesting about Joey Wong. He seems to be setting himself up for being inducted to the CCBL Hall of Fame (though I’m sure he has other things on his mind). Interestingly enough, there is already an autographed photo of him in the Hall.
Andrew…not sure Joey Wong has the numbers to be considered a hall of famer on the Cape. I like watching him play as he is a scrappy, hustling player that shows great leadership but I’m not sure he’s in that class. I guess we’ll have to see what happens this year unless he signs. (I assume he’s draft eligible) Third year players are interesting…Luke Murton quietly came back to the Cape for a 3rd year with Hyannis after spending two years in Wareham where he made fame for his performance at the homerun derby. Unfortunately, that was his only real showcase performance and he was drafted very low; thus came back to the Cape.
I think it would be difficult to make a case for Wong to be a Hall of Famer. His batting average over the past two years is .254. He has no power (no triples, no homeruns.) For a contact hitter, he has struck out 68 times while only walking 26 times. Over those two years, he has only accumulated 25 RBI. On the plus side, he is a defensive wizard. Last year, I saw him make a play on a ball hit into the shortstop hole on which I thought he had no chance to get the runner. When I saw where Wong was playing and where the ball was hit, I assumed it to be a basehit and was absolutely shocked when he fielded the ball and got the batter by a step.
Wong is an energetic player and the type of player I enjoy watching.
I would be a very tough Hall of Fame voter. I think all Halls of Fame should be only for the “best of the best,” not the “very good.” I realize it is much different on the Cape where players are considered for the Hall based on what they have been able to accomplish in one or two years usually. It is an interesting question, but I don’t think the numbers work in Wong’s favor.
I agree. It’s probably the last thing on his mind and he doesn’t have the stats/awards to warrant it currently. However, one last standout/breakout season would put him on the list, backed by two years of being a fan favorite with good stats.
Hi guys, nice to see interesting chat about Joey wong. We hope he can come back to us for a 3rd year. Although he is draft eligible and will likely sign a pro contract. He is a Potential 2009 Commodore. Kevin Nolan is also in the same possible status for ’09. We will be adding fresh names and updates to our roster soon. Sorry for delays in roster release.

No joey although one of my favorite players ever to work with. He will not likely be in our hall other than the great photo we have on the wall.
I agree that Wong is not Hall of Fame material, but that he is nonetheless a defensive wizzard. No player’s defense has caught my eye more than Wong’s during the past two seasons. He is fun to watch. And the photo of him on the wall in the Hall of Fame is stunning.
