Host families on the Cape

This Memorial Day weekend I talked with a family who recently was contacted by the West Coast League, a summer college baseball league in the Pacific Northwest, to serve as a host family for a player. The family is incredibly generous but the local team was asking if they also could drive the player to the field for practice and games. They weren’t too sure of that but they could offer a room, food, laundry and a family to hang with. The Cape League has always relied on the kindness of strangers and many host families to this day have long-standing relationships with players who moved on from the Cape to the Big Leagues. A story in the Albany, New York, newspaper reminded me that it’s clutch time for summer college teams as the season approaches. ...

Books: McCarthy is baseball’s odd man out

The Cape Cod Baseball League attracts top college players from universities everywhere, but very few come from the Ivy League. On my current CCBL roster I see Wareham has a pitcher from Harvard, but you won’t find many Ivy Leaguers on Cape teams. For college and summer league fans, we learn about the...

Ex-Red Sox Josh Faiola in the News

Dartmouth’s Josh Faiola was an integral part of the Y-D Red Sox championship season in 2004. In 18 relief appearances that year, Faiola compiled a 3-2 record to go with a sparkling 1.14 ERA. In three playoff outings covering four innings, Faiola won his only decision and saved two games while not giving up a run. Faiola was rewarded by being named co-Playoff MVP Award winner with teammate Ryan Rohlinger. In June, 2005, Faiola was picked in the 32nd round of the MLB draft by the Baltimore Orioles. An underwhelming financial offer made for what was likely an easy decision for Faiola to return to Dartmouth. After going back to Hanover and dominating Ivy League batters, Faiola was drafted again by the Orioles in June, 2006; this time in the 24th...
